Maternal mortality: causes and prevention strategies

Resumo: Integrative Literature review study, carried out in the Virtual Health Library and in the databases: Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online. Aiming to analyze in the national and international literature the scientific evidence about the causes of maternal deaths and the strategies used for its prevention. After analyzing the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a universe of ten studies was obtained. Showing that the main causes of maternal deaths are mostly considered preventable. Since the strategies contemplate the identification of priority interventions to be applied, use of protocols, good infrastructure, equipment, medications, adequate number of personnel and good management of services, method of menstrual regulation as prevention of illegal abortion. In this way, the strategies are reported by simple measures, often of low cost and that do not require high technology apparatus. The totality of studies that address strategies to reduce maternal mortality are of an international nature.

Con el objetivo de analizar en la literatura nacional e internacional la evidencia científica sobre las causas de las muertes maternas y las estrategias utilizadas para su prevención. Después de analizar los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, se obtuvo un universo de diez estudios. Mostrando que las principales causas de muertes maternas se consideran en su mayoría prevenibles. Dado que las estrategias contemplan la identificación de intervenciones prioritarias a ser aplicadas, el uso de protocolos, buena infraestructura, equipos, medicamentos, cantidad adecuada de personal y buena gestión de servicios, método de regulación menstrual como prevención del aborto ilegal. De esta manera, las estrategias se informan mediante medidas simples, a menudo de bajo costo y que no requieren aparatos de alta tecnología. La totalidad de los estudios que abordan estrategias para reducir la mortalidad materna son de carácter internacional.Estudo de revisão Integrativa da Literatura, realizada na Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde e nas bases de dados: Literatura Latino-Americana e do Caribe em Ciências da Saúde e Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online. Objetivando-se a analisar na literatura nacional e internacional as evidências científicas acerca das causas de mortes maternas e as estratégias utilizadas para sua prevenção. Após análise dos critérios de inclusão e exclusão, obteve-se um universo de dez estudos. Evidenciando que as principais causas de mortes maternas são em sua maioria consideradas evitáveis. Visto que as estratégias contemplam a identificação de intervenções prioritárias a serem aplicadas, uso de protocolos, boa infraestrutura, equipamentos, medicamentos, número de pessoal adequado e boa gestão dos serviços, método de regulação menstrual como prevenção ao aborto clandestino. Desta forma as estratégias são reportadas por medidas simples, muitas vezes de baixo custo e que não necessitam aparato de alta tecnologia.
