Resumo: Orofacial pain is like a more or less localized sensation of discomfort, anguish, or agony, resulting from the stimulation of specialized nerve endings. It serves as a protective mechanism against injury. Despite this initial information, the complexity of neurophysiological, neurochemical and psychological mechanisms makes a more in-depth study of the mechanisms involved in the control of referred orofacial pain necessary. Based on this, this study sought to better understand the neurophysiological mechanisms that produce referred pain in the craniofacial region. In the methodology, an integrative review of the literature was carried out based on the periodic databases, PubMed, Google Scholar and Scielo, whose time frame was between the years 2017 to 2022. In the results, it was clear initially that the diagnostic knowledge to differentiate some types of orofacial pain is still insufficient. Pain can confuse the professional, who is oriented in the reaction-stimulus sense and thinks in terms of cause. The pressure to seek help for the pain problem can help the patient not to learn the behavior of his pain.
