Spectrometric Determination of Sodium, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Sulfur in Soy Biodiesel

Resumo: Biodiesel is considered a renewable fuel produced from vegetable oils or animal fats and is used in vehicles equipped with diesel cycle engines. This fuel was introduced in the Brazilian energy matrix through law 11.097/05, assigning to the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuel (ANP) the specifications for biodiesel, aiming to ensure its quality in compliance with technical standards and norms. Based on this fact, this work aimed to evaluate the sodium (Na), potassium (K), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), phosphorus (P), and sulfur (S) contents in a biodiesel sample produced in the laboratory. Initially, the soybean oil was transesterified and then characterized by the parameters specific mass at 20 ºC and kinematic viscosity at 40 ºC. After this step, the determinations of the proposed elements began. For Na and K the atomic absorption technique was used, Mg, Ca, and P were determined by atomic emission with inductively coupled plasma and the S content by ultraviolet fluorescence. The values of 880 kg/m3, and 4.8 mm2/s for specific mass and viscosity, respectively, were the evidence that methyl esters were produced. The sum for sodium and potassium was 1.03 mg/kg, for calcium and magnesium was 0.22 mg/kg, phosphorus content was 5.00 mg/kg and sulfur content was 1.67 mg/kg. All the results indicate that the biodiesel produced is in accordance with ANP resolution No 45/14 for the investigated parameters.

Este combustible fue introducido en la matriz energética brasileña a través de la ley Nº 11.097/05, que asigna a la Agencia Nacional de Petróleo, Gas Natural y Biocombustible (ANP) las especificaciones para el biodiésel, con el objetivo de garantizar su calidad en cumplimiento de las normas y estándares técnicos. A partir de este hecho, este trabajo tuvo como objetivo evaluar los contenidos de sodio (Na), potasio (K), calcio (Ca), magnesio (Mg), fósforo (P) y azufre (S) en una muestra de biodiésel producida en el laboratorio. Inicialmente se transesterificó el aceite de soja y luego se caracterizó mediante los parámetros masa específica a 20 ºC y viscosidad cinemática a 40 ºC. Después de este paso, comenzaron las determinaciones de los elementos propuestos. Para el Na y el K se utilizó la técnica de absorción atómica, el Mg, el Ca y el P se determinaron por emisión atómica con plasma acoplado inductivamente y el contenido de S por fluorescencia ultravioleta. Los valores de 880 kg/m3 y 4,8 mm2/s para la masa específica y la viscosidad, respectivamente, fueron las pruebas que demostraron que se producían ésteres metílicos. La suma de sodio y potasio fue de 1,03 mg/kg, la de calcio y magnesio de 0,22 mg/kg, la de fósforo de 5,00 mg/kg y la de azufre de 1,67 mg/kg. Todos los resultados indican que el biodiésel producido cumple con la resolución de la ANP nº 45/14 para los parámetros investigados.O biodiesel é considerado um combustível renovável produzido a partir de óleos vegetais ou gorduras animais, sendo empregado em veículos equipados com motores do ciclo diesel. Após essa etapa iniciou-se as determinações dos teores dos elementos propostos. Para Na e K utilizou-se a técnica de absorção atômica, Mg, Ca e P foram determinados por emissão atômica com plasma indutivamente acoplado e o teor de S por fluorescência de ultravioleta. Os valores de 880 kg/m3, 4,8 mm2/s para massa específica e viscosidade, respectivamente, foram os indícios que comprovaram que os ésteres metílicos foram produzidos. O somatório para o sódio e potássio foi de 1,03 mg/kg, para o cálcio e magnésio foi de 0,22 mg/kg, o teor de fósforo foi de 5,00 mg/kg e o de enxofre 1,67 mg/kg.
