Resumo: | Objective: toevaluatethefrequencyandfactorsassociatedwiththeconcentrationof abdominal fat in health workers at a public university. Methods: cross-sectional study carried out with health workers at UFPE, in the city of Recife/PE/Brazil. Demographic (sex and age), socioeconomic (educational level) and lifestyle (physical activity, smoking and drinking) data were collected; anthropometry for the diagnosis of global/abdominal obesity, performed by body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), respectively. Results: there was a predominance of overweight (60.0%), with 20.0% obese, with no statistical difference between the sexes. Abdominal obesity was detected in 56.3% of men and 81.6% of women, with a statistically significant association between abdominal obesity and female sex, age 50 years and BMI in the overweight range. Conclusion: abdominal obesity was high in this group, with a higher prevalence in women. This frequency follows the Brazilian and global trend of this condition. |

Métodos: estudio transversal realizado con trabajadores de salud de la UFPE, en la ciudad de Recife/PE/Brasil. Se recogieron datos demográficos (sexo y edad), socioeconómicos (nivel educativo) y de estilo de vida (actividad física, tabaquismo y bebida); antropometría para el diagnóstico de obesidad global/abdominal, realizada por índice de masa corporal (IMC) y circunferencia de cintura (CC), respectivamente. Resultados: hubo predominio de sobrepeso (60,0%), con 20,0% de obesidad, sin diferencia estadística entre los sexos. La obesidad abdominal se detectó en el 56,3% de los hombres y el 81,6% de las mujeres, existiendo una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre la obesidad abdominal y el sexo femenino, edad ≥ 50 años e IMC en rango de sobrepeso. Conclusión: la obesidad abdominal fue alta en este grupo, con mayor prevalencia en mujeres. Esta frecuencia sigue la tendencia brasileña y mundial de esta condición.Objetivo: avaliar a frequência e os fatores associados à concentração de gordura abdominal em funcionários da área de saúde de uma universidade pública. Métodos: estudo transversal realizado em funcionários da área de saúde da UFPE, na cidade de Recife/PE/Brasil. Foram coletados dados demográficos (sexo e idade), socioeconômicos (grau de instrução) e de estilo de vida (prática de atividade física, hábito de fumar e de beber); antropometria para o diagnóstico de obesidade global/abdominal, realizados pelo índice de massa corporal (IMC) e pela circunferência da cintura (CC), respectivamente. Resultados: houve predominância de excesso de peso (60,0%), com 20,0% obesos, sem diferença estatística entre os sexos. A obesidade abdominal foi detectada em 56,3% dos homens e 81,6% das mulheres, com associação estatisticamente significante entre a obesidade abdominal e o sexo feminino, a faixa etária ³ 50 anos e o IMC na faixa de excesso de peso. Conclusão: obesidade abdominal foi elevada neste grupo, com prevalência maior nas mulheres.
