The contribution of spirituality in the care process of people in problematic use of drugs

The main objective of this study is to understand the role of spirituality in the health care process of people who abuse drugs from the perspective of users in a Therapeutic Community.  For this purpose, descriptive and field research with a quantitative-qualitative approach was used, using the questionnaire and interview for data collection, which were analyzed in a statistical-descriptive manner and through the method phenomenological.  In this way, it was found that spirituality plays an important role in the recovery of drug addicts, as it provides other experiences that give meaning to a new way of living and/or that re-signify the existence of such subjects, who in this exercise of self-knowledge and search for the real meaning of their being and being in the world, they make (re)discoveries and (re)learn new routes of possibilities and opportunities for new (re)beginnings.  In the discourse of the inmates themselves (research subjects), spirituality presents itself as a kind of “oxygen mask”, providing them sometimes with relief, sometimes with motivation, a fact that, according to them, significantly helps them in the process of abstinence from drugs.  It appears, therefore, that the aforementioned work, in its development, helped to understand the relationship between drug abuse and spirituality as a promoter of meaning in life.
