Strategies used by nursing professionals to promote patient safety and prevent adverse events in Intensive Care Units

Resumo: Objective to discover the strategies used by nursing professionals to promote patient safety and prevent the occurrence of Adverse Events (AEs) in Intensive Care Units (ICU). It is an integrative review of the literature, where the research includes the original articles, which will respond to the objectives of the study. Data from the Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (VHL), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System online (Medline), Nursing Data Bank (BDENF) and SciVerse Scopus were used. The results presented are divided into three categories for discussion: common EAs in ICUs; Nursing Assistance for the prevention of two EAs and permanent education for the prevention of EAs. A predominance of studies published in the last decade is identified, with emphasis on Brazilian publications. The strategies used by nursing professionals to promote patient safety and prevent AE's in the ICU were found and among them, stand out, in general, implementation of protocols, training of the team, use of technologies and correct notification of incidents.

Se trata de una revisión integradora de literatura, donde se incluyeron en la investigación los artículos originales, que respondieron a los objetivos del estudio. Se utilizaron las bases de datos de la Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval Sistem online (Medline), Base de Datos de Enfermería (BDENF) y SciVerse Scopus. Los resultados presentados se dividieron en tres categorías para discusión: EA comunes en las UCI; Cuidados de enfermería frente a la prevención de los EA y educación permanente para la prevención de los EA. Se identificó un predominio de estudios publicados en la última década, con énfasis en publicaciones brasileñas. Se encontraron las estrategias utilizadas por los profesionales de enfermería para promover la seguridad del paciente y prevenir los EA en la UCI y entre ellas, en general, se destacan la implementación de protocolos, la capacitación del equipo, el uso de tecnologías y el correcto reporte de incidentes.Objetiva-se descrever as estratégias utilizadas pelos profissionais de enfermagem para promover a segurança do paciente e prevenir a ocorrência de Eventos Adversos (EAs) em Unidades de Terapia Intensiva (UTI). Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura, onde na pesquisa foram incluídos os artigos originais, que responderam aos objetivos do estudo. Utilizou-se a base de dados da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval Sistem online (Medline), Banco de dados de Enfermagem (BDENF) e SciVerse Scopus. Os resultados apresentados foram divididos em três categorias para discussão: EAs comuns em UTIs; Assistência de Enfermagem frente à prevenção dos EAs e Educação permanente para prevenção de EAs. Identificou-se uma predominância de estudos publicados na última década, sendo destaque para as publicações brasileiras.
