Animal-assisted physiotherapy: dog co-therapist as motivator and mediator of exercises for chronic patients

Resumo: The implementation of a physical therapy protocol is essential to maintain the functionality of the elderly. The aim of this study was to evaluate the dog as a mediator and motivational factor in elderly patients with chronic diseases in face of animal-assisted physiotherapy (AAP) in an institution in the city of Pelotas. The qualitative and quantitative study was carried out between September and November 2019, with the participation of two dogs and five patients. There were seven sessions in average, which lasted 30 minutes and a protocol was established according to individual needs. As a method of evaluation, a questionnaire on the level of satisfaction was applied in the first and last session. Also, the scale of self-perception of happiness, heart rate and blood pressure were measured twice in each session. In conclusion, it was found that the dog was an ally in patients’ therapy promoting well-being and the AAP improved the patients’ emotional and physical conditions, as well as their proprioception and motor coordination.

El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar al perro como mediador y factor motivacional en pacientes ancianos con enfermedades crónicas frente a la fisioterapia asistida por animales (FAA) en una institución de la ciudad de Pelotas. Se trata de un estudio cualitativo y cuantitativo, desarrollado entre setiembre y noviembre de 2019 con la participación de dos perros y cinco pacientes. En promedio, se realizaron siete sesiones de 30 minutos de duración y se estableció un protocolo acorde a las necesidades de los pacientes. Como método de evaluación, se aplicó un cuestionario sobre el nivel de satisfacción en la primera y última sesión. Asimismo, se midió la escala de autopercepción de la felicidad, frecuencia cardiaca y presión arterial en dos momentos de cada sesión. Se concluye que el perro fue un aliado en la terapia de los pacientes promoviendo el bienestar y la FAA aplicada a los pacientes proporcionó mejoras en su estado emocional y físico, bien como en su propiocepción y coordinación motora.A implementação de um protocolo fisioterapêutico é fundamental para manter a funcionalidade do idoso. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o cão como mediador e fator motivacional em pacientes idosos com doenças crônicas frente à fisioterapia assistida por animais (FAA) em uma instituição do município de Pelotas. Trata-se de um estudo quali-quantitativo, desenvolvido entre setembro a novembro de 2019 com a participação de dois cães e cinco pacientes. Foram realizadas em média sete sessões as quais tinham duração de 30 minutos e foi estabelecido um protocolo conforme as necessidades dos pacientes. Como método de avaliação foi aplicado na primeira e última sessão um questionário sobre o nível da satisfação. Bem como, a escala de autopercepção da felicidade, frequência cardíaca e pressão arterial foram aferidas em dois momentos em cada sessão.
