Covid-19 and self-medication in students and teachers of a private higher education institution in Northern Brazil

Resumo: Introduction: easy access to pharmacies and medication purchases makes it a daily practice, this fact has taken on greater proportions in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and the dissemination of information through digital media. Objective: to verify the prevalence of self-medication in the treatment of COVID-19 among students and teachers. Methods: quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study with application of a questionnaire to assess the use of self-medication by students and professors of a higher education institution. Results: 63.6% of the students interviewed had no symptoms for COVID-19, whereas the professors were around 50%, 66.7% of the professors did not take medication to combat the virus, when analyzing the students 36.8% did medication use and the rate of self-medication was around 25% among students and 33% of professors, when asked if the chosen medications were effective even without proof, 34.9% reported that maybe and 18.6% of students informed that yes, 41.7% of the teachers think that such medications can be effective even without scientific evidence. Conclusion: it is noted that even the sample was from a health area environment, it is verified that motivations for beliefs not based on science and evidence-based medicine should be sought.

Objetivo: verificar la prevalencia de la automedicación en el tratamiento de la COVID-19 entre estudiantes y docentes. Métodos: estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo y transversal con aplicación de un cuestionario para evaluar el uso de automedicación por parte de estudiantes y profesores de una institución de educación superior. Resultados: El 63,6% de los estudiantes entrevistados no presentaba síntomas de COVID-19, mientras que los profesores rondaban el 50%, el 66,7% de los profesores no tomaba medicación para combatir el virus, al analizar a los estudiantes el 36,8% hacía uso de medicación y la tasa de automedicación rondaba el 25% entre los estudiantes y el 33% de los profesores, cuando se les preguntó si los medicamentos elegidos eran efectivos aún sin pruebas, el 34,9% informó que tal vez y el 18,6% de los estudiantes informó que sí, el 41,7% de los profesores piensa que tal los medicamentos pueden ser efectivos incluso sin evidencia científica. Conclusión: se constata que aun siendo la muestra del ámbito del área de la salud, se verifica que se deben buscar motivaciones para creencias no fundamentadas en la ciencia y la medicina basada en la evidencia.Introdução: O fácil acesso a farmácias e aquisições de medicações torna uma prática diária, tal fato tomou maiores proporções diante da pandemia de COVID-19 e da difusão de informações pelas mídias digitais. Objetivo: verificar a prevalência de automedicação no tratamento da COVID-19 entre discentes e docentes. Métodos: estudo quantitativo, descritivo e transversal com aplicação de questionário para avaliação do uso de automedicação por discentes e docentes do uma instituição de ensino superior. Resultados: 63,6% dos entrevistados discentes não tiveram sintomas para COVID-19, já os docentes ficaram em torno de 50%, 66,7% dos docentes não tomaram medicações para combate ao vírus, ao analisar os discentes 36,8% fizeram uso de medicações e a taxa de automedicação girou em torno de 25% entre os discentes e 33% dos docentes, ao serem questionados se a medicações escolhidas faziam efeito mesmo sem comprovação, 34,9% informaram que talvez e 18,6% dos discentes informaram que sim, já 41,7% dos professores acham que tais medicações podem fazer efeito mesmo sem comprovação científica.
