High-power laser for periodontal surgery in a patient with Down syndrome: A case report

Resumo: Individuals with Down's syndrome exhibit typical dental characteristics, which require specialized dental treatment. Additionally, due to the intellectual deficit, this management may be even more challenging. In this clinical case, we present a promising treatment proposal, using high power laser, in a 12-year-old boy with pericoronitis, who was unable to undergo periodontal surgery with other professionals. The use of this technique resulted in a brief and excellent postoperative care. We conclude that this clinical approach can be indicated for individuals with Down syndrome who have mild to moderate intellectual impairment.

Además, debido al déficit intelectual, esta gestión puede ser aún más desafiante. En este caso clínico presentamos una propuesta de tratamiento prometedora, con láser de alta potencia, en un niño de 12 años con pericoronitis, que no pudo ser sometido a cirugía periodontal con otros profesionales. El uso de esta técnica resultó en un breve y excelente cuidado postoperatorio. Concluimos que este enfoque clínico puede estar indicado para personas con síndrome de Down que tienen un deterioro intelectual leve a moderado.Indivíduos com síndrome de Down apresentam características dentais típicas, que requerem tratamento odontológico especializado. Além disso, devido ao déficit intelectual, este manejo pode ser ainda mais desafiador. Neste caso clínico, apresentamos uma proposta de tratamento promissora, com laser de alta potência, em um menino de 12 anos com pericoronarite, que não pôde se submeter à cirurgia periodontal com outros profissionais. A utilização dessa técnica resultou em um breve e excelente resultado pós-operatório.
