Labor Violence in the Emergency Room in times of COVID-19: perceptions of the nursing team

Resumo: The objective was to know the perceptions of the nursing staff about workplace violence and its possible intensification in times of COVID-19 confrontation in the hospital emergency unit. This is a qualitative study, carried out with 14 professionals Nurses and Nursing Technicians of the Emergency Room of a university hospital in the north of the State of Paraná. Individual, semi-structured, audio-recorded interviews were carried out, fully transcribed and submitted to content analysis. The questions focused on understanding the employees' views about workplace violence concerning its concept, the daily life of the front line in confronting COVID-19, the triggering factors in the urgency and emergency unit, and suggestions for strengthening safety in the Emergency Room. Five categories of analysis emerged: “The meaning of workplace violence and the face of the aggressors”; “Labour violence in the emercency sector reference for COVID-19”; “The triggering factors of labor violence in the Emercency Room”; “Episodes of workplace violence for victims”; and “Professionals suggestions for coping with workplace violence”. It was found that workplace violence is a multifaceted reality and portrays a great challenge to be overcome by the nursing team. Furthermore, with the emergence of COVID-19, there was a change in the profile of clients, intensifying the occurrence of workplace violence.

Se trata de un estudio cualitativo, realizado con 14 profesionales Enfermeros y Técnicos de Enfermería del Servicio de Emergencia de un hospital universitario del norte del Estado de Paraná. Se realizaron entrevistas individuales, semiestructuradas, grabadas en audio, transcritas íntegramente y sometidas a análisis de contenido. Las preguntas escudriñaron la comprensión de los empleados sobre la violencia en el trabajo encuanto a su concepto, la forma en que se presentaba en el día a día como frente para enfrentar COVID-19, los factores desencadenantes en la unidad de urgencias y emergencias y las sugerencias para reforzar la seguridad en la sala de urgencias. Se han establecido cinco categorías de análisis: "El significado de la violencia laboral y el rostro de los agresores"; "Referencia de violencia laboral en el sector de emergencia por COVID-19"; "Los factores desencadenantes de la violencia laboral en urgencias"; "Episodios de violencia laboral para las víctimas" y "Sugerencias de profesionales para el afrontamiento de la violencia laboral". Se verificó que la violencia en el trabajo es una realidad multifacética y representa un gran desafío a superar por el equipo de enfermería. Además, con la circunstancia del COVID-19, se produjo un cambio en el perfil de los clientes, que intensificó la aparición de la violencia en el trabajo.Objetivou-se conhecer as percepções da equipe de enfermagem em relação à violência laboral e sua possível intensificação em tempos de enfrentamento à COVID-19 na unidade de urgência e emergência hospitalar. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo, realizado com 14 profissionais Enfermeiros e Técnicos de Enfermagem do Pronto-Socorro de um hospital universitário no norte do Estado do Paraná. Foram realizadas entrevistas individuais, semi-estruturadas, audiogravadas, transcritas na íntegra e submetidas à análise de conteúdo. As questões perscrutaram a compreensão dos funcionários sobre a violência laboral quanto ao seu conceito, à maneira como se apresentava no cotidiano enquanto linha de frente ao enfrentamento da COVID-19, aos fatores desencadeantes na unidade de urgência e emergência e as sugestões para o fortalecimento da segurança no Pronto-Socorro. Emergiram cinco categorias de análise: “O significado da violência laboral e a face dos agressores”; “A violência laboral no setor emergência referência para COVID-19”; “Os fatores desencadeantes de violência laboral no Pronto-Socorro”; “Os episódios de violência laboral para as vítimas” e “Sugestões dos profissionais para o enfrentamento da violência laboral”. Verificou-se que a violência laboral é uma realidade multifacetada e retrata um grande desafio a ser vencido pela equipe de enfermagem.
