Structure, floristic composition and biotic integrity of Atlantic Forest fragment in secondary succession

Resumo: Understanding forests in forest succession is essential to reveal the contribution of these communities to conservation and to understand the ecological filters that interfere in their successional trajectories. The objectives of this work were to describe the floristic composition and phytosociological structure of the shrub-tree community of an Atlantic Forest fragment in secondary succession, to evaluate its biotic integrity and to establish relationships among these parameters. Fourteen plots measuring 25 x 4 m were installed, individuals with DBH ≥ 5 cm were sampled and indicators were recorded to calculate the Biotic Integrity Index (IIB). Two hundred twenty-two individuals were sampled, belonging to 72 species, 48 genera and 24 families. The diversity index was 3.62 nat/ind and the equability was 0.84. The total density was 1586 ind./ha and the basal area was 39 m². The average IIB between plots was 32.35, representing a regular biotic community. The factors that most contributed to this index were the low number of palm trees, vascular epiphytes and late indicator species, and the many of tangles of vines. The results obtained in the phytosociological survey were largely complemented by the indicators that make up the IIB. The target vegetation area of this study represents a small, degraded forest fragment with, probably, its forest succession process compromised, being essential to the implementation of management actions.

El presente trabajo tuvo como objetivo describir la composición florística y la estructura fitosociológica de la comunidad arbustiva-arbórea de um fragmento de Mata Atlántica en sucesión secundaria, evaluar su integridad biótica y establecer relaciones entre estos parámetros. Se instalaron 14 parcelas com dimensiones de 25 x 4 m, se muestrearon individuos con DAP ≥ 5 cm y se registraron indicadores para el cálculo del Índice de Integridad Biótica (IIB). Se muestrearon un total de 222 individuos, pertenecientes a 72 especies, 48 géneros y 24 familias. El índice de diversidad fue de 3,62 nat/ind y la equidad de 0,84. La densidad total fue de 1586 ind./ha y el área basal de 39 m². la media Del IIB entre las parcelas fue de 32.35, lo que representa una comunidad biótica regular. Los factores que más contribuyeron a este índice fueron el bajo número de palmeras, epífitas vasculares y especies indicadoras tardías y la gran cantidad de enmarañado de lianas. Los resultados obtenidos en el estudio fitosociológico se complementaron en gran medida con los indicadores que componen el IIB. El área de vegetación objeto de este estudio representa un pequeño fragmento de bosque degradado con, probablemente, comprometido su proceso de sucesión forestal, siendo importante la implementación de acciones de gestión.A compreensão das florestas em sucessão florestal é fundamental para revelar a contribuição dessas comunidades na conservação e para entender os filtros ecológicos que interferem em suas trajetórias sucessionais. Foram amostrados 222 indivíduos, pertencentes a 72 espécies, 48 gêneros e 24 famílias. O índice de diversidade foi de 3,62 nat/ind e a equabilidade 0,84. A densidade total foi de 1586 ind./ha e a área basal de 39 m². O IIB médio entre as parcelas foi de 32,35 que representa uma comunidade biótica regular. Os fatores que mais contribuíram para este índice foram o baixo número de palmeiras, epífitas vasculares e espécies tardias indicadoras e a grande quantidade de emaranhados de trepadeiras. Os resultados obtidos no levantamento fitossociológico foram largamente complementados pelos indicadores que compõe o IIB.
