Plant biotechnology 4.0: an approach to “Speed Breeding”

Resumo: | The increase in human population related to food demand and the current climate change scenario have challenged researchers around the world, making it essential to optimize the obtainment of cultivars with high productivity, combined with higher nutritional quality and greater resistance to abiotic and biotic conditions, prioritizing the sustainability and the preservation of natural resources. In this context, plant breeding associated with biotechnology techniques makes it possible to genetically modify plants for human benefit, in order to solve problems and create products that meet the desirable agronomic traits, however, the development of new cultivars requires a long period to select superior strains with high agronomic performance. To reduce the cycle in classic breeding programs, some techniques are being used and show promising results, one of them is Speed Breeding, which reduces the breeding time and speeds up research by obtaining new generations quickly, through the use of controlled light and temperature conditions to increase plant growth, accelerating the search for cultivars that meet the needs of producers and consumers. This work aims to present, through a critical approach, the Speed Breeding methodology as a tool to accelerate plant breeding programs. |

En este contexto, el fitomejoramiento asociado a técnicas de biotecnología permite modificar genéticamente las plantas para beneficio humano, con el fin de resolver problemas y crear productos que cumplan con las características agronómicas deseables, sin embargo, el desarrollo de nuevos cultivares requiere de un largo período para seleccionar variedades superiores. cepas de alto rendimiento agronómico. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo presentar, através de un enfoque crítico, la metodología Speed Breeding como una herramienta para acelerar los programas de fitomejoramiento.O aumento da população humana relacionado à demanda alimentar e o atual cenário de mudanças climáticas têm desafiado pesquisadores no mundo todo, tornando indispensável otimizar a obtenção de cultivares com alta produtividade, aliada a maior qualidade nutricional e maior resistência às condições abióticas e bióticas, priorizando a sustentabilidade e a preservação dos recursos naturais. Neste contexto, o melhoramento de plantas associado às técnicas de biotecnologia possibilita modificar geneticamente as plantas para o benefício humano, a fim de solucionar problemas e criar produtos que atendam as características agronômicas desejáveis, no entanto, o desenvolvimento de novas cultivares demanda um longo período para selecionar linhagens superiores com elevado desempenho agronômico. Para reduzir o ciclo em programas de melhoramento clássico, algumas técnicas estão sendo usadas e apresentam resultados promissores, uma delas é o Speed Breeding, que reduz o tempo de melhoramento e acelera a pesquisa, por meio da obtenção de novas gerações de forma rápida, através do uso de condições de luz e temperatura controladas para aumentar o crescimento das plantas, acelerando a busca por cultivares que atendam às necessidades dos produtores e consumidores.
