Evaluation of medicinal plants as potential food antimicrobial additives

Resumo: Foodborne diseases still represent a public health problem worldwide. The resistance of microrganisms to various antibiotics has been stimulating research aimed at the discovery of new substances with natural antimicrobial action. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential use of plants commonly used in folk medicine as antimicrobials. The decocts were submitted to the analysis of antimicrobial activity for Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella Enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa by the microdilution technique. Croton blanchetianus stem bark extract presented the best results, being effective on all microrganisms tested in concentrations of 0.5 to 19 mg / mL. For the extract of the bark of the Myracrodruon urundeuva stem only activity on E. coli was not verified. The stem bark extract of Croton nepetaefolius showed activity on S. aureus and S. Enteritidis and only inhibitory for L. monocytogenes. The leaf extract of Sideroxylon obtusifolium was not effective only on E. coli and P. aeruginosa. In view of this, the aqueous extracts of these plants appear as a new source of substances with antibacterial potential for application in the food industry.

La resistência de los microrganismos a vários antibióticos ha estimulado la investigación dirigida al descubrimiento de nuevas sustâncias con acción antimicrobiana natural. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el uso potencial de plantas comúnmente utilizadas en la medicina popular como antimicrobianos. Los decoctos se sometieron a análisis de actividad antimicrobiana para Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella Enteretidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli y Pseudomonas aeruginosa utilizando la técnica de microdilución. El extrato de la corteza del tallo de Croton blanchetianus mostro los mejores resultados, siendo efectivo em todos los microrganismos probados em concentraciones de 0.5 a 19 mg/mL. Para el extracto de la corteza del tallo de Myracrodruon urundeuva, solo no se verificó la actividad en E. coli. El extracto de corteza de tallo de Croton nepetaefolius mostro actividad em S. aureus y S. Enteretidis y solo inhibidor de L. monocytogenes. El extracto de hoja de Sideroxylon obtusifolium no fue efectivo em E. coli y P. aeruginosa. Por lo tanto, los extractos acuosos de estas plantas aparecen como uma nueva fuente de sustâncias com potencial antibacteriano para su aplicación em la industria alimentaria.As doenças transmitidas por alimentos ainda representam um problema de saúde pública em todo o mundo. A resistência de microrganismos a vários antibióticos vem estimulando pesquisas para descobrir novas substâncias com ação antimicrobiana natural. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a potencialidade de utilização de plantas comuns usadas na medicina popular como antimicrobianos. Os decoctos foram submetidos à análise de atividade antimicrobiana de Listeria monocytogenes , Salmonella Enteritidis, Staphylococcus aureus , Escherichia coli e Pseudomonas aeruginosa pela técnica de microdiluição. O extrato da casca do caule do Croton blanchetianusmostra os melhores resultados, sendo efetivo sobre todos os microrganismos testados em amostras de 0,5 a 19 mg / mL. Para extrair a casca do caule de Myracrodruon urundeuva, somente não foi verificada a atividade sobre E. coli . O extrato de casca de caule do Croton nepetaefolius exibe a atividade sobre S. aureus e S. Enteritidis e apenas inibitória para L. monocytogenes . O extrato da folha de Sideroxylon obtusifolium não foi efetivo sobre E. coli e P. aeruginosa.
