Resumo: The family structure and dynamics have changed over time, as has the understanding and design of this institution. It is believed that the exploration of these different structures and conceptions is important for understanding the family today. This theoretical article aims to carry out a brief historical review of the family, from prehistory to contemporaneity in Western society, especially in Brazilian society. Therefore, through bibliographical research, the contributions of the main researchers on the family in its historical, social, economic, political, anthropological and psychological path and the repercussions of this path on the contemporary family were addressed. It was concluded that the family cannot be explained from a single and universal model; therefore, it is necessary to consider the complexity, polymorphism and plurality in their configurations in post-modernity.

Se cree que la exploración de estas diferentes estructuras y concepciones es importante para la comprensión de la familia hoy. Este artículo, de carácter teórico, tiene como objetivo realizar una breve revisión histórica de la familia, desde la prehistoria hasta la época contemporánea en la sociedad occidental, especialmente en la sociedad brasileña. Para ello, a través de una búsqueda bibliográfica, se abordaron los aportes de los principales investigadores sobre la familia en su trayectoria histórica, social, económica, política, antropológica y psicológica y las repercusiones de esta trayectoria en la familia contemporánea. Se concluyó que la familia no puede explicarse desde un modelo único y universal; por lo tanto, debe ser considerado.A estrutura e dinâmica familiares sofreram mudanças ao longo do tempo, assim como a compreensão e concepção desta instituição. Acredita-se que a exploração dessas diferentes estruturas e concepções seja importante para a compreensão da família na atualidade. Este artigo, de natureza teórica, tem como objetivo realizar uma breve revisão histórica da família, desde a pré-história até a contemporaneidade na sociedade ocidental, especialmente na sociedade brasileira. Para tanto, por meio de uma pesquisa bibliográfica, foram abordadas as contribuições dos principais pesquisadores sobre a família em seu percurso histórico, social, econômico, político, antropológico e psicológico e as repercussões desse percurso na família contemporânea.
