Does the teaching of dentistry guarantee the necessary knowledge of occlusion and temporomandibular joint?

Resumo: The study of occlusion, besides being one of the most controversial areas of dentistry, also brings fear to many professionals regarding its concepts and correct application and correlation. However, the correct analysis of the stomatognathic system and the patient's occlusal relationship guarantees, despite everything, a safer rehabilitation for the patient and for the professional. The aim of this study was to analyze and display indices through a systematic review related to the contemporary teaching of dentistry and the preparation of professionals to diagnose and treat temporomandibular and occlusal conditions, including their dysfunctions. The review was carried out according to parameters of the Cochrane organization, through references included by searches in the Science Direct, PubMed, LILACS and Google Scholar databases, all in English. The research showed a great lack of knowledge on the part of students and professionals about the study of occlusion, evidencing a gap in didactics in this area that has dragged on for decades. This reality perpetuates the dissemination of concepts without a scientific basis, while some professionals are concerned, and try by themselves, to define parameters of diagnosis and treatment for patients covered by this coverage area.

Sin embargo, el correcto análisis del sistema estomatognático y la relación oclusal del paciente garantiza, a pesar de todo, una rehabilitación segura para el paciente y para el profesional. El objetivo de este estudio fue analizar y visualizar índices a través de una revisión sistemática relacionada con la enseñanza contemporánea de la odontología y la preparación de los profesionales para diagnosticar y tratar las afecciones temporomandibulares y oclusales, incluidas sus disfunciones. La revisión se realizó de acuerdo con los parámetros de la organización Cochrane, mediante referencias incluidas mediante búsquedas en las bases de datos Science Direct, PubMed, LILACS y Google Scholar, todas en inglés. La investigación mostró un gran desconocimiento por parte de estudiantes y profesionales sobre el estudio de la oclusión, evidenciando un vacío en la didáctica de esta área que se viene desarrollando desde hace décadas. Esta realidad perpetúa la difusión de conceptos sin base científica, mientras algunos profesionales se preocupan, y tratan por sí mismos, de definir parámetros de diagnóstico y tratamiento para los pacientes cubiertos por esta área de cobertura.O estudo da oclusão, além ser uma das áreas mais controversas da odontologia, também traz medo a diversos profissionais quanto a seus conceitos e correta aplicação e correlação. Entretanto, a correta análise do sistema estomatognático e da relação oclusal do paciente garante, apesar de tudo, uma reabilitação mais segura para o paciente e para o profissional. O objetivo desse estudo foi analisar e exibir índices através de uma revisão sistemática relacionada ao ensino contemporâneo da odontologia e o preparo dos profissionais para diagnosticar e tratar condições temporomandibulares e oclusais, incluindo suas disfunções. A revisão foi realizada segundo parâmetros da organização Cochrane, através de referências inclusas por buscas nas bases Science Direct, PubMed, LILACS e Google Scholar, todas em inglês. A pesquisa mostrou apresentou um grande desconhecimento por parte de estudantes e profissionais sobre o estudo da oclusão, evidenciando uma lacuna na didática dessa área que se arrasta por décadas.
