Evaluation of Medical internship students' communication skills about breaking bad news

Resumo: This study aims to assess the skills of medical students in communicating bad news. Cross-sectional, analytical and observational study using a practical assessment checklist in the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) style of medical students based on the SPIKES protocol containing 12 different items. A total of 172 checklists were evaluated, 61 (35.5%) from the 1st semester of the internship, 59 (34.3%) from the 2nd semester and 52 (30.2%) from the third semester. Of the total, 56.97% were female. There was no statistical difference between sex and periods evaluated (p>0.05). The mean number of correct answers in the 1st semester of the internship was 8.21 ±2.60, that of the 2nd semester was 7.13 ±2.51 and that of the 3rd semester was 9.98 ±1.72. Medical interns performed well on difficult news communication skills, however, the evaluation semester proved to be a factor of improvement in performance, evidencing the importance of training this skill.

Estudio transversal, analítico y observacional utilizando una lista de verificación de evaluación práctica en el estilo de examen clínico objetivo estructurado (ECOE) de estudiantes de medicina basado en el protocolo SPIKES que contiene 12 ítems diferentes. Se evaluaron un total de 172 listas de cotejo, 61 (35,5%) del 1er semestre de la pasantía, 59 (34,3%) del 2º semestre y 52 (30,2%) del 3º semestre. Del total, el 56,97% eran mujeres. No hubo diferencia estadística entre sexo y periodos evaluados (p>0,05). La media de aciertos en el 1er semestre de la pasantía fue 8,21 ±2,60, la del 2º semestre fue 7,13 ±2,51 y la del 3er semestre fue 9,98 ±1,72. Los pasantes de medicina se desempeñaron bien en las habilidades de comunicación de noticias difíciles, sin embargo, el semestre de evaluación demostró ser un factor de mejora en el desempeño, evidenciando la importancia de entrenar esta habilidad.Este estudo objetiva avaliar as habilidades de estudantes de medicina na comunicação de más notícias. Estudo transversal, analítico e observacional por meio de checklist da avaliação prática em estilo Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), de graduandos de medicina, baseado no protocolo SPIKES, contendo 12 itens distintos. Foram avaliados 172 checklist, sendo 61 (35,5%) do 1° semestre do internato, 59 (34,3%) do 2° semestre e 52 (30.2%) do 3º semestre. Do total, 56,97% eram do sexo feminino. Não houve diferença estatística entre o sexo e os períodos avaliado (p>0,05). A média de acertos do 1° semestre do internato foi de 8,21 ±2,60, a do 2° semestre foi de 7,13 ±2,51 e a do 3° semestre foi de 9,98 ±1,72.
