The contribution of the uncles and aunts in the life of their nephews/nieces in a public school of a neighborhood of the periphery of Salvador, Bahia State, Brazil

Resumo: This research aims to fulfill gaps in the literature about the role of uncles / aunts in family contexts. Theoretical contributions came from studies on human ethology and family in society. The main objective was to investigate the role of the paternal and maternal aunts and uncles in the socialization of the nephews, seeking to identify the factors of care and protection in families belonging to the popular strata residing in the Suburban Railway of the city of Salvador, Bahia, after the nephews´ and nieces´ perspective. The specific objectives were: To investigate the place of uncles / aunts in the socialization of their nephews and nieces and their contribution as extended family members in their development; describe the activities related to the socialization processes exercised by the uncles / aunts. The study was a descriptive and exploratory quantitative research using a closed questionnaire and socio-demographic data. 206 students answered a closed questionnaire after a pre-study with 462 students to identify the presence of uncles/aunties and to collect general data about them. The main results revealed that the uncles' contribution was due to affective support, care activities and financial contribution. The aunts were the most mentioned by the nephews/nieces and uncles and aunts of matrilineal lineage received the highest percentages of mentions.  The conclusion was that the main role played by the uncles/aunts is affective and that the aunts are the most active in seeking the welfare of these children and adolescents. Further research, broadening the analysis and gathering information, is necessary.

Sus aportes teóricos fueron estudios sobre etología humana y familia en la sociedad. El objetivo de este estudio fue el de investigar el papel de los tíos paternos y maternos en la socialización de los sobrinhos/as, buscando identificar los factores de cuidado y protección, en familias pertenecientes a las capas populares, residentes en el Suburbio Ferroviario de la ciudad de Salvador, Bahia, desde la perspectiva de los sobrinos / as. Fueron sus objetivos específicos: Investigar el lugar de los tios / tías en la socialización de sus sobrinos y sobrinas y su contribución como miembros de la familia extendida en el desarrollo de los sobrinos y de las sobrinas; describir las actividades relacionadas con los procesos de socialización ejercidas por los tios / tías. Se trata de una investigación cuantitativa descriptiva y exploratoria en la que se utilizó un cuestionario cerrado y datos sociodemográficos. 206 alumnos respondieron al cuestionario cerrado después de un pre-estudio con 462 alumnos para identificar la presencia de tíos y recoger datos generales sobre éstos. Los principales resultados revelaron que la contribución de los tíos ocurrió por el apoyo afectivo, por actividades de cuidado y por la contribución financiera. Las tías fueron las más mencionadas por los sobrinos y tíos y tías de linaje matrilinear recibieron los mayores porcentuales de menciones. Se concluyó que el principal papel ejercido por los tíos es el afectivo y que las tías son las más activas en buscar el bienestar de esos niños, jóvenes y adolescentes. Trata-se de uma pesquisa quantitativa descritiva e exploratória em que se utilizou um questionário fechado e dados sócio-demográficos. 206 alunos responderam ao questionário fechado após um pré-estudo com 462 alunos visando identificar a presença de tios e coletar dados gerais sobre estes. Os principais resultados revelaram que a contribuição dos tios ocorreu pelo apoio afetivo, por atividades de cuidado e pela contribuição financeira. As tias foram as mais mencionadas pelos sobrinhos e tios e tias de linhagem matrilinear receberam os maiores percentuais de menções. Concluiu-se que o principal papel exercido pelos tios é o afetivo e que as tias são as mais atuantes em buscar o bem-estar dessas crianças, jovens e adolescentes.
