Genotoxic Potential of the Metholic Extract of Psidium guineense Sw (Araçá verdadeiro) in Oral Mucosa Cells

Resumo: The present research seeks to perform the analysis of the genotoxic potential of the methanolic extract of the plant Psidium (P.) guineense Sw, popularly known as ‘Araçá Verdadeiro’, against cells in the oral cavity. The donor's oral mucosa cells were exposed ex vivo to the methanolic extract of P. guineense in concentrations (50, 100, 500 and 1000 µg/mL) for 30 minutes, the cell pellet smear was made and subsequent fixation on slides stained with 2% Giemsa. The analysis was done using an optical microscope, the whole experiment carried out in triplicate. The data reveal that even at high concentrations (500 and 1000 µg/mL) of the methanolic extract of P. guineense Sw. Cell toxicity is considered low with a percentage of normal cells (94.5% to 94%) compatible with the negative control. Therefore, the methanolic extract, belonging to the species P. guineense Sw. has the bioactive potential that can be explored through the possible application of this compound as a phytotherapic, however more studies must be performed to better understand the toxicity profile of this product.

Las células de la mucosa oral del donante se expusieron ex vivo al extracto metanólico de P. guinense en concentraciones (50, 100, 500 y 1000 µg/mL) durante 30 minutos, se realizó el frotis de pellets de células y posterior fijación en portaobjetos. teñido con 2% de Giemsa. El análisis se realizó con un microscopio óptico, todo el experimento se realizó por triplicado. Los datos revelan que incluso a altas concentraciones (500 y 1000 µg/mL) del extracto metanólico de P. guineense Sw. La toxicidad celular se considera baja con un porcentaje de células normales (94.5% a 94%) compatible con el control negativo. Por lo tanto, el extracto metanólico, perteneciente a la especie P. guineense Sw. Tiene el potencial bioactivo que puede explorarse mediante la posible aplicación de este compuesto como fitoterapía, sin embargo, se deben realizar más estudios para comprender mejor el perfil de toxicidad de este producto.O presente estudo busca realizar a análise do potencial genotóxico do extrato metanólico da planta Psidium (P.) guineense Sw, popularmente conhecido como ‘Araçá Verdadeiro’, frente a células da cavidade oral. As células de mucosa oral dos doadores foram expostas ex-vivo ao extrato metanólico de Psidium guineense em concentrações (50, 100, 500 e 1000 µg/mL) por 30 minutos, houve a confecção de esfregaço do pellet de células e posterior fixação em lâminas coradas com Giemsa 2%. A análise foi feita com o uso de microscópio óptico, todo o experimento realizado em triplicata. Os dados revelam que mesmo em altas concentrações (500 e 1000 µg/mL) do extrato metanólico de P. guineense Sw. a toxicidade celular é considerada baixa com porcentagem de células normais (94,5% a 94%) compatíveis com o controle negativo.
