Experiences of children and adolescents with Diabetes mellitus, insulin users during their school hours

Resumo: | Objective: To analyze the daily life and experiences of children and adolescents with diabetes mellitus, insulin users, during school time. Methodology: Study with a quantitative approach carried out in 2021. The participants were insulin users who attend or attended a school environment. An online questionnaire with questions about treatment and school life was used. Results: Of the 105 survey participants, 41.90% were diagnosed with less than eight years of age; 30.50% use a syringe for insulin administration; 74.50% apply insulin during the school period and among these, 59.10% have autonomy in the application and 60% identified embarrassment in applying the medication in the school institution; 57.14% reported having compromised school performance due to DM complications; 73% indicate that the school institution is not prepared to assist students during the clinical complications of DM; 62.85% report the discontinuity of the diet during the school period and 35.23% had some problem during school trips. Conclusion: The lack of preparation in schools hinders the management of students with DM and encompasses several factors: difficulty in emergency care in case of hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic crises; the lack of knowledge of professors and other employees to help with the application of insulin and other needs; the misinformation of other students and the difficulty on school trips. It is of great importance that the school is prepared to receive these students and their demands, and for this it requires the commitment of the family, health team and school for the training of education professionals. |

Metodología: Estudio con enfoque cuantitativo realizado en 2021. Los participantes fueron usuarios de insulina que asisten o asistieron a un ambiente escolar. Se utilizó un cuestionario en línea con preguntas sobre el tratamiento y la vida escolar. Resultados: De los 105 participantes de la encuesta, el 41,90% fueron diagnosticados con menos de ocho años; El 30,50% utiliza una jeringa para la administración de insulina; 74.50% aplica insulina durante el período escolar y de estos, 59.10% tiene autonomía en la aplicación y 60% identificó vergüenza en la aplicación de la medicación en la institución escolar; El 57,14% refirió haber comprometido el rendimiento escolar por complicaciones de la DM; El 73% indica que la institución escolar no está preparada para asistir a los estudiantes durante las complicaciones clínicas de la DM; El 62,85% informa la discontinuidad de la dieta durante el período escolar y el 35,23% tuvo algún problema durante los viajes escolares. Conclusión: La falta de preparación en las escuelas dificulta el manejo de los estudiantes con DM y engloba varios factores: dificultad en la atención de emergencia en caso de crisis de hipoglucemia e hiperglucemia; la falta de conocimiento de los profesores y otros empleados para ayudar con la aplicación de insulina y otras necesidades; la desinformación de otros estudiantes y la dificultad en los viajes escolares. Es de gran importancia que la escuela esté preparada para recibir a estos estudiantes y sus demandas, y para ello se requiere del compromiso de la familia, el equipo de salud y la escuela para la formación de los profesionales de la educación.Objetivo: Analisar o cotidiano e as experiências das crianças e adolescentes com diabetes mellitus, usuários de insulina, durante o período escolar. Metodologia: Estudo de abordagem quantitativa ocorrido em 2021. Os participantes foram usuários de insulina que frequentam ou frequentaram ambiente escolar. Foi usado questionário on-line com questões sobre tratamento e cotidiano escolar. Resultados: Dos 105 participantes da pesquisa 41,90% foram diagnosticados com menos de oito anos de idade; 30,50% utilizam seringa para a administração da insulina; 74,50% aplicam insulina durante o período escolar e dentre estas 59,10 % tem autonomia na aplicação e 60% identificaram constrangimento em aplicar a medicação na instituição escolar; 57,14% relatam ter o rendimento escolar comprometido devido às complicações da DM; 73% indicam que a instituição escolar não está preparada para atender os alunos durantes as intercorrências clínicas da DM; 62,85% relatam a descontinuidade da dieta no período escolar e 35,23% tiveram algum problema durante os passeios escolares. Conclusão: A falta de preparação das escolas dificulta o manejo dos estudantes com DM e englobam diversos fatores: a dificuldade no atendimento de emergência em caso de crises hipoglicêmicas e hiperglicêmicas; a falta de conhecimento dos professores e demais funcionários para auxílio da aplicação de insulina e outras necessidades; a desinformação dos outros alunos e a dificuldade nos passeios escolares.
