Frequency of anti-Leptospira sp. in sheep from the São João do Rio do Peixe microregion, Paraíba state, Brazil

Resumo: Leptospirosis is an infectious disease that affects both domestic and wild animals, in addition to being an important zoonosis. In sheep farming it is mainly responsible for causing problems in the reproductive sphere, such as abortion, birth of weak and premature offspring, in addition to a drop in production. The sheep species is not refractory to the disease, and infected sheep can remain in the herd as amplifiers of the infection. Based on the lack of studies on the presence of the bacteria in the animals of the region, the present study aimed to verify the presence of anti-Leptospira sp. in sheep in the microregion of São João do Rio do Peixe, Paraíba state, Brazil. Blood samples were collected from 50 animals, and the experiment was conducted between December 2017 and February 2018. The diagnosis of leptospirosis was determined by the microagglutination test (MAT) technique, using a collection of 24 serological variants. The frequency found was 2% of the animals, all reactions occurred for the serogroup Pomona, which is normally maintained by the swine species. This transmission probably occurred due to the contact between species. The results found demonstrate the need to implement preventive measures, such as, for example, avoiding contact with pigs and their excreta, serological monitoring of herds, cleaning and disinfection of facilities and the use of personal protective equipment, especially for people working in direct contact with this species.

En la cría de ovejas es el principal responsable de causar problemas en la esfera reproductiva, como el aborto, el nacimiento de crías débiles y prematuras, además de una caída en la producción. La especie de oveja no es refractaria a la enfermedad, y las ovejas infectadas pueden permanecer en el rebaño como amplificadores de la infección. Basado en la falta de estudios sobre la presencia de la bacteria en los animales de la región, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo verificar la presencia de anti-Leptospira sp. en ovejas en la microrregión de São João do Rio do Peixe, estado de Paraíba, Brasil. Se recogieron muestras de sangre de 50 animales, y el experimento se realizó entre diciembre de 2017 y febrero de 2018. El diagnóstico de leptospirosis se determinó mediante la técnica de aglutinación microscópica en suero (AMS), utilizando una colección de 24 variantes serológicas. La frecuencia encontrada fue del 2% de los animales, todas las reacciones ocurrieron para el serogrupo Pomona, que normalmente es mantenido por la especie porcina. Esta transmisión probablemente ocurrió debido al contacto entre especies. Los resultados encontrados demuestran la necesidad de implementar medidas preventivas, como, por ejemplo, evitar el contacto con los cerdos y sus excretas, el monitoreo serológico de los rebaños, la limpieza y desinfección de las instalaciones y el uso de equipos de protección personal, especialmente para las personas que trabajan en contacto directo con esta especie.A leptospirose é uma doença de caráter infeccioso, que afeta tanto animais domésticos, quanto silvestres, além de ser uma importante zoonose. Na ovinocultura é responsável principalmente por causar problemas na esfera reprodutiva, como aborto, nascimento de crias fracas e prematuras, além de queda na produção. A espécie ovina não é refratária à doença, e os ovinos infectados podem permanecer no rebanho como amplificadores da infecção. Com base na deficiência de estudos sobre a presença da bactéria nos animais da região, o presente trabalho objetivou verificar a presença de anticorpos anti-Leptospira sp. em ovinos na microrregião de São João do Rio do Peixe, estado da Paraíba, Brasil. Foram coletadas amostras de sangue de 50 animais, sendo o experimento conduzido entre os meses de dezembro de 2017 a fevereiro de 2018. O diagnóstico da leptospirose foi determinado pela técnica de soroaglutinação microscópica (SAM), utilizando-se uma coleção de 24 variantes sorológicas. A frequência encontrada foi de 2% dos animais, todas as reações ocorreram para o sorogrupo Pomona, que é mantida normalmente pela espécie suína. Esta transmissão provavelmente deu-se devido ao contado entre as espécies.
