The communication of boccia athletes with cerebral palsy through the use of computer vision in Paraná, Brazil

Resumo: Paralympic Boccia (BP) is a sport that assists people with severe physical disabilities, including people with cerebral palsy (CP), whose social interaction and communication may be flawed. In this sport, athletes with communication difficulties can produce a lower sports performance, as they are not able to convey their needs clearly. To increase communication channels during game tasks, was the objective of this study. The research, divided into two phases, had the participation of 27 BP athletes. In Phase 1, 25 athletes responded to an online form, with 69 phrases used by them to communicate in a game. In Phase 2, five athletes, among which three also participated in Phase 1, used the PGCA system. The data showed that the most frequent phrases are greeting and farewell phrases, and some discussion phrases related to the game. In Phase 2, the PGCA system built an image, considering the speed of the gesture and the body segment used for its execution, which was interpreted and the corresponding sentence was pronounced. In the final stage of the research, the effectiveness of 22% in gesture recognition, the efficiency of 12.80s for the system to recognize the gestures and pronounce the corresponding frase and the good usability for the context of the study, favor indications for an active participation with greater autonomy of these athletes, providing also new experiences of accessibility to BP, pedagogical teaching and paralympic sports education.

En este deporte, los deportistas con dificultades de comunicación pueden producir un menor rendimiento deportivo, ya que no son capaces de transmitir com claridade sus necesidades. Para aumentar los canales de comunicación, se propone utilizar un sistema informático no invasivo. Evaluar el uso PGCA por atletas con dificultades de comunicación, durante tareas de juego, fue el objetivo del estudio. La investigación dividida en dos fases contó con la participación de 27 atletas. En la Fase 1, 25 atletas respondieron a un formulario on line, con 69 frases utilizadas para la comunicación en el juego. En la Fase 2, cinco atletas, utilizaron el sistema PGCA. Los datos mostraron que las frases más frecuentes son frases de saludo y despedida y algunas frases de discusión relacionadas con el juego. En la Fase 2, el sistema PGCA construyó uma imagem, considerando la velocidad del gesto y el segmento del cuerpo utilizado para su ejecución, la cual fue interpretada y pronunciada la sentencia correspondiente. En la etapa final de la investigación, la efectividad del 22% en el reconocimiento, la eficiencia de 12.80s para que el sistema pronuncie la frase correspondiente y la buena usabilidad para el contexto de estudio, favorecen indicaciones para una participación activa de los deportistas, aportando también nuevas experiencias de accesibilidad, enseñanza pedagógica y deporte paralímpico educativo.A Bocha Paralímpica (BP) esporte que atende pessoas com deficiência física severa, entre elas pessoas com paralisia cerebral (PC), cujo convívio social e a comunicação, podem ser falhos. Neste esporte, os atletas com dificuldades na comunicação podem produzir um desempenho esportivo menor, por não conseguirem transmitir suas necessidades de forma clara. Para aumentar as vias de comunicação no jogo, propõe-se o uso de um sistema computacional não invasivo. Avaliar o uso do PGCA por atletas com dificuldades de comunicação, durante tarefas do jogo, foi o objetivo deste estudo. A pesquisa, dividida em duas fases, contou com a participação de 27 atletas de BP. Na Fase 1, 25 atletas, responderam a um formulário on-line, com 69 frases utilizadas para a comunicação no jogo.
