Analysis of the reduction of the surface area of Dom Helvécio Lake, Minas Gerais, Brazil and its relationship with the rainfall trend in the region

Resumo: The climate change associated impacts will be sensed worldwide with profound implications for the human population. The sustainability of civilization have been impacted due to anomalous periods of climate and changes in land use. Nowadays, weather forecasts and seasonal weather forecasts are becoming increasingly accurate, as a result of  advances in remote sensing, including satellites, science improvements, and increases in computing power. This manuscript  aimed to perform spatio-temporal analysis of the surface area of Dom Helvécio Lake, by using data from satellite images associated with geoprocessing techniques. In order to allow inferences about the influence of rainfall regimes, the Mann-Kendall test was also used to evaluate precipitation trends in the region. As an GIS analysis result, a reduction of about 38 ha area over these 14 years has been identified. The Mann-Kendall test result indicated a tendency for significant precipitation to decrease by 87%, since the p-value is less than 0.1282. Given the importance of the theme, the study demonstrated that climate change can be considered in watershed management and public policy making, as the population must adapt to its effects.

Las civilizaciones tuvieron su sostenibilidad impactada debido a períodos anómalos de clima y cambios en el uso de la tierra. Hoy en día, los pronósticos meteorológicos y los pronósticos climáticos estacionales se han vuelto cada vez más precisos, gracias a los avances en la teledetección, incluidos los satélites, las mejoras en la ciencia y los aumentos en la capacidad computacional. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo realizar un análisis espacio-temporal de la superficie del lago Dom Helvécio, ubicado en el municipio de Marliéria, en el estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, utilizando datos de imágenes de satélite asociadas con técnicas de geoprocesamiento. Para hacer inferencias sobre la influencia de los regímenes de lluvia, la prueba de Mann-Kendall también se utilizó para evaluar las tendencias de precipitación en la región. Como resultado del análisis SIG, se identificó una reducción en el área de aproximadamente 38 hectáreas durante estos 14 años. El resultado del método de Mann-Kendall indica una tendencia a disminuir la precipitación significativa en un 87%, ya que el valor p es inferior a 0,1282. Dada la importancia del tema, el estudio demuestra que el cambio climático puede considerarse en el manejo de las cuencas hidrográficas y en la creación de políticas públicas, ya que la población debe adaptarse a sus efectos.Os impactos associados às mudanças climáticas serão sentidos em todo o mundo e, provavelmente, terão implicações profundas para a população humana. Civilizações tiveram sua sustentabilidade impactada devido a períodos anômalos do clima e alterações do uso do solo. Atualmente, previsões do tempo e previsões climáticas sazonais tem se tornado cada vez mais precisas, graças aos avanços no sensoriamento remoto, incluindo satélites, melhorias em ciências, e incrementos na capacidade computacional. Este estudo objetivou realizar análise espaço-temporal da área superficial do lago Dom Helvécio, localizado no município de Marliéria, no estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil, utilizando dados das imagens dos satélites associadas às técnicas de geoprocessamento. Para possibilitar inferências sobre a influência dos regimes de chuva, também, se fez uso do teste de Mann-Kendall para avaliar tendências de precipitação da região. Como resultado da análise em SIG, identificou-se uma redução na área de cerca de 38 hectares ao longo desses 14 anos. O resultado pelo método de Mann-Kendall indica tendência a diminuição da precipitação significativa em 87%, uma vez que o valor-p é menor que 0,1282.
