Game-based learning as a teaching and learning strategy in medical education

Resumo: | Game-based learning (GBL) refers to an innovative approach arising from the use of games that have educational value for teaching purposes. Although several studies have been carried out relating games and teaching, few studies have explored the effectiveness of using game-based learning in the education of medical courses. This work aims to carry out a literature review to assess the effectiveness of this new methodology in teaching in the field of medicine. The research was carried out in the following databases: PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) and Cochrane. The terms contained in the DeCs were used: "Experimental Games", "Teaching", "Education of Graduation in Medicine" in Portuguese and English, also considering their synonyms, in combinations and associations with Boolean operators. Among the 529 articles retrieved, 38 were selected to be read in full. The results show that GBL strategies are as efficient as traditional classes, presenting the difference against the latter because they are more conducive to student engagement, as well as fun and interactive. The use of Game-Based Learning techniques promotes the teaching and learning of topics associated with Medical Sciences in Higher Education, and can be as efficient or more efficient than the teaching models traditionally adopted. Also, GBL promotes the necessary motivation for adult students in their learning process, being this is an important differential compared to other methodologies based on the simple exposition of contents by the teacher. |

Aunque se han realizado varios estudios relacionando juegos y enseñanza, pocos estudios han explorado la efectividad del uso del aprendizaje basado en juegos en la educación de cursos de medicina. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar una revisión bibliográfica para evaluar la eficacia de esta nueva metodología en la docencia en el campo de la medicina. La investigación fue realizada en las siguientes bases de datos: PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual en Salud (BVS) y Cochrane. Se utilizaron los términos contenidos en los DeCs: "Juegos Experimentales", "Enseñanza", "Educación de Graduación en Medicina" en portugués e inglés, considerando también sus sinónimos, en combinaciones y asociaciones con operadores booleanos. Entre los 529 artículos recuperados, 38 fueron seleccionados para ser leídos en su totalidad. Los resultados muestran que las estrategias GBL son tan eficientes como las clases tradicionales, presentando la diferencia frente a estas últimas porque son más propicias para la participación de los estudiantes, además de divertidas e interactivas. El aprendizaje promueve la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de temas asociados a las Ciencias Médicas en la Educación Superior, pudiendo ser tan o más eficientes que los modelos de enseñanza tradicionalmente adoptados, además, el GBL promueve la motivación necesaria de los estudiantes adultos en su proceso de aprendizaje, siendo éste un importante diferencial frente a otras metodologías basadas en la simple exposición de contenidos por parte del docente.A Aprendizagem Baseada em Jogos (Game-based learning - GBL) refere-se a uma abordagem inovadora oriunda do uso de jogos que possuem valor educacional para fins de ensino. Embora várias pesquisas realizadas relacionando jogos e ensino, poucos estudos têm explorado a eficácia da utilização da aprendizagem baseada em jogos na educação de cursos da área médica. Este trabalho tem como objetivo a elaboração de uma revisão da literatura para avaliar a eficácia dessa nova metodologia no ensino na área da medicina. A pesquisa foi realizada nas bases: PubMed, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) e Cochrane. Foram utilizados os termos constantes no DeCs: “Jogos Experimentais”, “Ensino”, “Educação de Graduação em Medicina" em língua portuguesa e inglesa, considerando ainda seus sinônimos, em combinações e associações aos operadores booleanos. Dentre os 529 artigos recuperados, 38 foram selecionados para leitura na íntegra. Os resultados mostram que as estratégias de GBL são tão eficientes quanto as aulas tradicionais, apresentando o diferencial frente esta última por serem mais propícios ao engajamento do aluno, bem como divertidos e interativos. O uso de técnicas de Game-Based Learning promove o ensino e a aprendizagem de tópicos associados às Ciências Médicas no Ensino Superior, podendo ser tão ou mais eficiente que os modelos de ensinagem tradicionalmente adotados.
