Acceptability and effect of a psycho-educational intervention on the burden of family caregivers of the older adults

Resumo: | Objective: To evaluate the acceptability and effect of a psychoeducational intervention program on the burden of family caregivers of the older adults. Method: Quasi-experimental study carried out with six caregivers of totally dependente older adults residents in the city of Palmas/TO, in the year 2021. The intervention implemented was the “Program to take care of myself to take care of the other” conducted by telephone support, individually, once per week for five weeks. Care overload was measured by the Zarit Scale, at three moments: pre-intervention and two post-intervention (in the 6th and 10th follow-up sessions). For the analysis, the paired T test was used. Results: A significant difference was identified between the means of burden scores in the pre-intervention (mean=47.33 points) and in the 10th follow-up session (mean=42 points). Regarding acceptability, the caregivers investigated reported satisfaction and usefulness of the intervention program, demonstrating that expectations were exceeded. Conclusion: The psychoeducational intervention showed a decrease in the levels of burden of family caregivers of older adults, indicating the importance of fully carrying out the proposed intervention, since its effect was established over time. |

Método: Estudio cuasi-experimental realizado con seis cuidadores de ancianos encamados residentes en la ciudad de Palmas/TO, en el año 2021. La intervención implementada fue el “Programa cuidarme para cuidar al otro” realizado por teléfono apoyo, individualmente, una vez por semana durante cinco semanas. La sobrecarga asistencial se midió mediante la Escala de Zarit, en tres momentos: preintervención y dos postintervención (en la 6ª y 10ª sesiones de seguimiento). Para el análisis se utilizó la prueba T pareada. Resultados: Se identificó una diferencia significativa entre las medias de las puntuaciones de sobrecarga en la preintervención (media = 47,33 puntos) y en la décima sesión de seguimiento (media = 42 puntos). En cuanto a la aceptabilidad, los cuidadores investigados relataron satisfacción y utilidad del programa de intervención, demostrando que las expectativas fueron superadas. Conclusión: La intervención psicoeducativa mostró una disminución en los niveles de sobrecarga de los cuidadores familiares de ancianos, indicando la importancia de la realización integral de la intervención propuesta, ya que su efecto se estableció en el tiempo.Objetivo: Avaliar a aceitabilidade e efeito de um programa de intervenção psicoeducativa na sobrecarga de cuidadores familiares de idosos. Método: Estudo quase-experimental realizado com seis cuidadores de idosos acamados residentes na cidade de Palmas/TO, no ano de 2021. A intervenção implementada foi o “Programa cuidar de mim para cuidar do outro” conduzido por suporte telefônico, individualmente, uma vez por semana, durante cinco semanas. A sobrecarga de cuidado foi mensurada pela Escala de Zarit, em três momentos: pré-intervenção e duas pós-intervenção (na 6ª e 10ª sessões de acompanhamento). Para a análise utilizou-se o Teste T pareado. Resultados: Identificou-se diferença significante entre as médias dos escores de sobrecarga na pré-intervenção (média=47,33 pontos) e na 10ª sessão de acompanhamento (média=42 pontos). Acerca da aceitabilidade, os cuidadores investigados referiram satisfação e utilidade do programa de intervenção, demonstrando que as expectativas foram superadas.
