Review of the scientific literature of Himatanthus drasticus (Mart.) Plumel

Resumo: | Himatanthus drasticus is a plant widely used for the treatment of various diseases such as ulcer, cancer, scarring, worms, inflammation in general, among other diseases. Due to its wide use, this species is widely used in biological and pharmacological assays. Thus, this work aims to carry out a literature review of the aforementioned species, highlighting its ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, and biological activities. The keyword “Himatanthus drasticus” and its synonyms “Plumeria drastica”, “Himatanthus fallax” and “Plumeria fallax” were used through the Boolean operator “OR” as main indexes for searching in the following platforms PubMed, PubMed Central, SciElo, Scopus and Web of Science. Articles published in English and Portuguese in the last 15 years (2006-2021) were considered. Studies demonstrate that H. drasticus has studies that show a variety of relevant pharmacological activities. Among the most studied organs of H. drastiscus, the leaves stand out, which have several chemical constituents present, such as phenolic compounds, among them quercetin, quercetin 3-latyroside, isoquercetrin, rutin, among others. The biotechnological potential of H. drasticus is remarkable, with latex being the main product, thus corroborating the traditional therapy. Phytochemically, this species presents iridoids, belonging to the terpene class. Which may be responsible for the biological and pharmacological activities observed in this review. Studies about the conservation of this species are necessary, since it suffers anthropic pressure through its extractivism. |

Debido a su amplio uso, esta especie es ampliamente utilizada en ensayos biológicos y farmacológicos. Así, este trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar una revisión bibliográfica de la mencionada especie, destacando sus actividades etnofarmacológica, fitoquímica, biológica. Se utilizó la palabra clave “Himatanthus drasticus” y sus sinónimos “Plumeria drastica”, “Himatanthus fallax” y “Plumeria fallax” mediante el operador booleano “OR” como principales índices de búsqueda en las siguientes plataformas PubMed, PubMed Central, SciElo, Scopus y Web of Science. Se consideraron artículos publicados en inglés y portugués en los últimos 15 años (2006-2021). Los estudios demuestran que H. drasticus tiene estudios que muestran una variedad de actividades farmacológicas relevantes. Entre los órganos más estudiados de H. drastiscus se destacan las hojas, las cuales tienen presentes varios constituyentes químicos, como compuestos fenólicos, entre ellos la quercetina, quercetina 3-latirósido, isoquercetrina, rutina, entre otros. El potencial biotecnológico de H . drasticus es notable, siendo el látex el principal producto, corroborando así la terapia tradicional. Fitoquímicamente, esta especie presenta iridoides, pertenecientes a la clase de los terpenos. Lo cual puede ser responsable de las actividades biológicas y farmacológicas observadas en esta revisión. Son necesarios estudios sobre la conservación de esta especie, ya que sufre presión antrópica por su extractivismo.Himatanthus drasticus é uma planta amplamente utilizada para o tratamento de diversas enfermidades tais como úlcera, câncer, cicatrização, vermes, inflamações em geral, dentre outras.
