Diagnosis of consumption of turtles (Testudines) in the municipality of Abaetetuba, Pará: Implications for the conservation of species

Resumo: The objective of this work was to carry out a survey about the conceptions of the residents of the municipality of Abaetetuba in the state of Pará, about the use and consumption of turtles in the region. The study area covered 38 neighborhoods and 72 islands, which constitute the so-called islands region of the Municipality of Abaetetuba in the state of Pará, northern region of Brazil. For data acquisition, online forms were applied in October 2020 and later the data were processed through the Microsoft Office Excel program (Version 2016). 146 responses were obtained covering 14 neighborhoods and 9 communities, including islands and branches. About 68% (N=100) were female and 32% (N=46) were male. Of those interviewed, 90% (N=129) live in urban areas and 10% (N=17) in rural areas. Regarding consumption, 14% (N=20) had already consumed turtles while 86% (N=126) said they had never consumed them. Among consumers of this type of meat (N=20), 100% stated that they know other people who have already consumed it, as well as of the non-consumers (N=126), 56% (N=71) know people who have already eaten this type of meat. of meat. Regarding meat consumption, the most cited species was the tortoise (51.71%), followed by Perema (14.19%) and Tracajá (4.6%). This study presents preliminary data for the development of management and conservation plans for chelonian populations in the Abaetetuba region.

El área de estudio abarcó 38 barrios y 72 islas, que constituyen la llamada región insular del Municipio de Abaetetuba en el estado de Pará, región norte de Brasil. Para la adquisición de datos se aplicaron formularios en línea en octubre de 2020 y posteriormente se procesaron los datos a través del programa Microsoft Office Excel (Versión 2016). Se obtuvieron 146 respuestas cubriendo 14 barrios y 9 comunidades, entre islas y sucursales. Alrededor del 68% (N=100) eran mujeres y el 32% (N=46) eran hombres. De los entrevistados, el 90% (N=129) vive en zona urbana y el 10% (N=17) en zona rural. En cuanto al consumo, el 14% (N=20) ya había consumido tortugas mientras que el 86% (N=126) dijo que nunca las había consumido. Entre os consumidores desse tipo de carne (N=20), 100% afirmou que conhece outras pessoas que já consumiram, bem como dos (N=126) não consumidores, 56% (N=71) conhece pessoas que já se alimentaram desse tipo de carne. En cuanto al consumo de carne, la especie más citada fue la tortuga terrestre (51,71%), seguida de Perema (14,19%) y Tracajá (4,6%). Este estudio presenta datos preliminares para el desarrollo de planes de manejo y conservación de las poblaciones de quelonios en la región de Abaetetuba.O objetivo deste trabalho foi realizar um levantamento acerca das concepções dos moradores do município de Abaetetuba no estado do Pará, sobre uso e consumo dos quelônios da região. A área de estudo abrangeu 38 bairros e 72 ilhas, que constituem a chamada região das ilhas do Município de Abaetetuba no estado do Pará, região Norte do Brasil. Para aquisição dos dados foram aplicados formulários online no mês de outubro de 2020 e posteriormente os dados foram processados através do programa Microsoft Office Excel (Versão 2016). Foram obtidas 146 respostas que abrangeram 14 bairros e 9 comunidades, incluindo ilhas e ramais. Cerca de 68% (N=100) eram do sexo feminino e 32% (N=46) do sexo masculino. Dos entrevistados, 90% (N=129) residem na zona urbana e 10% (N= 17) na zona rural. Em relação ao consumo, 14% (N=20) já consumiram quelônios enquanto 86% (N=126) afirmou nunca ter consumido. Entre os consumidores desse tipo de carne (N=20), 100% afirmou que conhece outras pessoas que já consumiram, bem como dos (N=126) não consumidores, 56% (N=71) conhece pessoas que já se alimentaram desse tipo de carne. Com relação ao consumo de carne, a espécie mais citada foi o Jabuti (51,71%), seguida pela Perema (14,19%) e Tracajá (4,6%).
