Women and the body position in the parturition process: the reality of a university hospital

Resumo: Objective: to discuss the autonomy of women in relation to body position in the birth process assisted by obstetricians. Method: a descriptive, exploratory, qualitative study conducted with 22 obstetricians from the obstetrics service of a University Hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Semi-structured interviews were used, applied between the months of June to August 2019. The data collected were submitted to contente analysis in the thematic-categorial modality. Results: Women were free to adopt the position of their preference in the parturition process. However, the majority opted for lithotomics. The prefessionals justified preferring the supine pósiton in the expulsive period, for better choice of the supine position by the woman was motivated by several factors. Health eduction in prenatal care proved to be a decisive fator for the autonomy of women, envisioning a successful parturitive process.

Se utilizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas, aplicadas entre los meses de junio a agosto de 2019. Los datos recolectados fueron sometidos a análisis de contenido en la modalidad temática-categórica. Resultados: Las mujeres tuvieron libertad para adoptar la posición de su preferencia en el proceso de parto. Sin embargo, la mayoría optó por la litotomía. Los prefesionales justificaron preferir la posición supina en el período expulsivo, para un mejor manejo em situaciones de distocia, pero respetaron el deseo de la mujer. Conclusión: La elección de la posición supina por parte de la mujer estuvo motivada por varios factores. La educación sanitaria en la atención prenatal resultó ser un factor decisivo para la autonomía de la mujer, vislumbrando un proceso de parto exitoso.Objetivo: discutir a autonomia da mulher frente à posição corporal no processo de parturição assistido por médicos obstetras. Método: estudo descritivo, exploratório, qualitativo, realizado com 22 médicos obstetras do serviço de obstetrícia de um Hospital Universitário no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Utilizaram-se entrevistas semiestruturadas, aplicadas entre os meses de junho a agosto de 2019.  Os dados coletados foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo na modalidade temático-categorial. Resultados: As mulheres tiveram a liberdade de adotar a posição da sua preferência no processo de parturição. No entanto, a maioria optou pela litotômica. Os profissionais justificaram preferir a posição supina no período expulsivo, por melhor manejo em situações de distócias, mas respeitaram o desejo da mulher. Conclusão: A escolha da posição supina pela mulher foi motivada por diversos fatores.
