Resumo: | The addition of fluor public water supplies and its monitoring are important measures to prevent tooth decay and control dental fluorosis. This research sought to analyze and monitor fluoride levels in water supplies, in the city of Penedo, AL, Brazil. A quantitative approach was taken, outlined as follows: 1. An epidemiological survey was taken with 2335 schoolchildren (aged 7-12 years); degree of fluorosis was classified according to Dean (0=normal to 5=severe), and determined by a trained and calibrated (kappa=0.95) team composed of dentists, community health workers, and oral health assistants. 2. Fluoride ion concentration was surveyed from 2014 to 2018 at the Water and Sewage Service (SAAE). 3. The water supply of 11 schools was monitored monthly for 6 consecutive months (from 2019 to 2020). Fluoride analysis was performed using the specific electrode method (mg F/mL). The analysis of fluoride ions between schools was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results show that 56.1% of the students had some degree of fluorosis, predominantly Grade I and II (p=0.103). The fluoride ion concentrations reported by SAAE (0.8428 – 0.9025 mgF/mL) were significantly different from those evaluated by the researcher (0.9372 – 1.0394 mgF/mL) (p=0.0103). The prevalence of dental fluorosis in schoolchildren aged 7-12 years in the city of Penedo, AL, is high, especially the very mild or mild cases. The concentration of fluoride ions in the public water supply is above that recommended for the city. |

Esta investigación tuvo como objetivo analizar y monitorear los niveles de flúor en el suministro de agua en la ciudad de Penedo-AL. El abordaje cuantitativo se realizó mediante: 1. Encuesta epidemiológica en 2.335 escolares (7-12 años), grado de fluorosis clasificado según Dean (0 = normal a 5 = grave), realizado por (odontólogos, promotores comunitarios y auxiliares de salud bucal ) entrenados y calibrados (Kappa = 0,95); 2. Relevamiento de la concentración de iones de fluoruro en el período de 2014 a 2018 en el servicio de abastecimiento de agua y alcantarillado (SAAE); y 3. Monitoreo mensual del suministro de agua de 11 escuelas durante 6 meses consecutivos (2019 y 2020). El análisis de fluoruro se determinó mediante el método de electrodo específico (ppmF). El análisis de los datos de iones de flúor entre as escuelas se realizó mediante las pruebas de Kruskal. Se encontró que el 56,1% de los estudiantes presentaba algún grado de fluorosis, predominantemente grado I y II (p = 0,103). Las concentraciones de iones fluoruro presentadas por la SAEE (0.8428 - 0.9025 mg F / mL) y por el investigador (0.9372 - 1.0394 mg F / mL) fluctuaron significativamente (p = 0.01031). La prevalencia de fluorosis dental en Penedo-AL es alta en escolares de 7 a 12 años. Los grados más frecuentes son ligeros y muy ligeros. A concentración de iones fluoruro está por encima de la ideal para la ciudad.A adição de flúor nas águas de abastecimento público e seu monitoramento são meios importantes na prevenção à cárie dentária e controle de fluorose dentária. Essa pesquisa buscou analisar e monitorar os teores de fluoreto nas águas de abastecimento no município de Penedo- AL. Abordagem quantitativa foi realizada por meio de: 1. Levantamento epidemiológico em 2.335 escolares (7-12 anos), grau de fluorose classificada de acordo com Dean (0=normal a 5=severo), realizados por (dentistas, agentes comunitários de saúde e auxiliares de saúde bucal) treinada e calibrada (Kappa = 0,95); 2. Levantamento da concentração de íons fluoretos no período de 2014 a 2018 no serviço de abastamento de água e esgoto (SAAE); e 3. Monitoramento mensal da água de abastecimento de 11 escolas durante 6 meses consecutivos (2019 e 2020). Análise de fluoretos foi determinada pelo método do eletrodo específico (ppmF). Análise de íons fluoretos entre as escolas foi realizada pelos testes de Kruskal-Wallis. Verificou-se que 56,1% dos escolares apresentou algum grau de fluorose, sendo predominante o grau I e II (p=0,103). As concentrações de íons fluoretos apresentados pelo SAEE (0,8428 – 0,9025 mg F/mL) e pelo pesquisador (0,9372 – 1,0394 mg F/mL) oscilaram significativamente (p=0,0103). A prevalência de fluorose dentária em Penedo-AL é elevada nos escolares de 7-12 anos. Sendo os graus leve e muito leve os de maior ocorrência.
