Concrete at high temperatures: a case study of a fire in a residential building in Minas Gerais

Resumo: This paper deals with a structural diagnosis carried out in the Afonso Alves Residential Building, in Barbacena, Minas Gerais, after the occurrence of a fire that damaged all the reinforced concrete structures. First, a bibliographic review was made on the behavior of concrete when submitted to high temperatures, explaining the main physical and chemical phenomena that occur in this condition and discussing the effects observed from the concrete microstructure to a macroscopic analysis. Besides, it was discussed the reactions that are triggered when the hardened reinforced concrete is undergoing the process of temperature increase, reaching high temperatures and also when it suffers the cooling process. The main pathologies found in reinforced concrete structures, their main causes, effects and ways to prevent them were presented, to preserve the useful life foreseen in the project's conception. It was also highlighted the extreme importance of the Fire and Panic Prevention and Combat Project in buildings, whether residential, commercial or industrial. Next, the description of the studied building was made, presenting the structural diagnosis in a detailed way, indicating the main structures affected by the fire, the visual inspections in all the visible structures and the results of the destructive and non-destructive tests. Finally, some recovery measures were pointed out that should be adopted to treat the pathologies that are compromising the stability and durability of the reinforced concrete structures, besides recommending some structural reinforcements, to guarantee the safety of the building and its occupants.

En primer lugar, se realizó una revisión bibliográfica sobre el comportamiento del hormigón cuando se somete a altas temperaturas, explicando los principales fenómenos físicos y químicos que ocurren en esta condición y discutiendo los efectos observados desde la microestructura del hormigón hasta un análisis macroscópico. Además, se discutió sobre las reacciones que se desencadenan cuando el hormigón armado endurecido se somete al proceso de aumento de temperatura, alcanzando altas temperaturas y también cuando se somete al proceso de enfriamiento. En la secuencia, se presentaron las principales patologías encontradas en las estructuras de hormigón armado, sus principales causas, efectos y formas de prevenirlas, con el objetivo de preservar la vida útil prevista en el diseño del proyecto. También se destacó la extrema importancia del Proyecto de Prevención y Extinción de Incendios y Pánico (PPCI) en los edificios, ya sean residenciales, comerciales o industriales. A continuación se realizó la descripción del edificio estudiado, presentando el diagnóstico estructural en detalle, indicando las principales estructuras afectadas por el incendio, las inspecciones visuales en todas las estructuras visibles y los resultados de los ensayos destructivos y no destructivos. Finalmente, se señalaron algunas medidas de recuperación que deberían adoptarse para tratar las patologías que están comprometiendo la estabilidad y la durabilidad de las estructuras de hormigón armado, además de recomendar algunos refuerzos estructurales, con el fin de garantizar la seguridad del edificio y de sus ocupantes.Este artigo trata de um diagnóstico estrutural realizado no Edifício Residencial Afonso Alves, em Barbacena, Minas Gerais, após a ocorrência de um incêndio que danificou todas as estruturas de concreto armado. Primeiramente, foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica sobre o comportamento do concreto quando submetido a altas temperaturas, explanando sobre os principais fenômenos físicos e químicos que ocorrem nessa condição e discorrendo sobre os efeitos observados desde a microestrutura do concreto até uma análise macroscópica. Além disso, discorreu-se sobre as reações que se desencadeiam quando o concreto armado endurecido está sofrendo o processo de aumento da temperatura, alcançando altas temperaturas e também quando ele sofre o processo de resfriamento. Na sequência foram apresentadas as principais patologias encontradas nas estruturas de concreto armado, suas principais causas, efeitos e formas de preveni-las, visando preservar a vida útil prevista na concepção do projeto. Destacou-se ainda a extrema importância do Projeto de Prevenção e Combate a Incêndio e Pânico (PPCI) nas edificações, sejam elas residenciais, comerciais ou industriais. Em seguida foi feita a descrição do edifício estudado, apresentando o diagnóstico estrutural de forma detalhada, indicando as principais estruturas afetadas pelo incêndio, as inspeções visuais em todas as estruturas visíveis e os resultados dos ensaios destrutivos e não destrutivos.
