Resumo: On February 26, 2020, the first case of the disease caused by the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) was reported in Brazil, which is a virus of the Coronaviredae family with the potential for pandemic dissemination, configuring itself as a public health problem of great magnitude in the global sphere. To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of the COVID-19 pandemic that occurred in the state of Alagoas and to make a comparative study with the Northeast and some data from Brazil. This is a cross-sectional, retrospective and descriptive epidemiological study. Data were extracted from the Ministry of Health portal and DATA/-SUS, specifically from the Health Surveillance Secretariat (SVS) and data from the State Health Secretariats of Brazil, in the period from the confirmation of the first case in the Northeast to December 2020. Of the 1,722,841 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Northeast, 27.5% were from Bahia, 17.4% from Ceará and 11.4% from Maranhão, these amounted to more than 50% of cases. While Alagoas, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe represented the 3 states with the lowest percentages of positive cases. The sex variable was analyzed, with an important expression of positive cases in the female population, comorbidities and main symptoms, comparing the behavior between the state of Alagoas and the Northeast region. There are still many knowledge gaps inherent to COVID-19, thus the importance of epidemiological knowledge of the disease in different regions of the country is observed in order to be able to draw up intervention plans aimed at the needs of each region.
