Resumo: The Cerrado is formed by a set of ecosystems containing great biodiversity, although it is the Brazilian biome most threatened by anthropic action. The need for a critical look at human actions towards the environment makes the school an ideal place for discussions related to environmental preservation and sustainability, issues that must be worked on in an interdisciplinary way. Thus, this study aimed to understand the perceptions of first year students of a Federal Educational Institution located in the municipality of Uruçuí-PI related to the Cerrado, as well as the importance of a field class for learning specific content related to this biome and stimulate environmental education. The students were informed about the purpose of the research and received a term of responsibility that was duly signed by their parents. At first, a semi-structured questionnaire related to the characterization of the Cerrado biome was applied and later a field class was held with the participating students. At the end of the class, the students answered a new questionnaire identical to the first, but with four more questions. From the responses observed in the two questionnaires, it was noticed that the contents related to the Cerrado biome were not worked properly in the school context of the participants, and that the field class stimulated an improvement in the students' performance on knowledge related to the Cerrado and preservationist attitudes, since it allowed them to associate theoretical concepts to their daily lives and to a practical Cerrado experience.
