Medicinal plants and herbal medicines in the dental clinic: a literature review

Resumo: The use of herbal medicines is an ancient practice, recognized and transmitted between generations. With the objective of carrying out a survey of the literature on the use of medicinal plants for the treatment of oral disorders, this work compiled experimental research articles and/or literature review, with full and free texts from PubMed, LILACS, SciELO and ScienceDirect, published in English or Portuguese, peer-reviewed, during 2018 to 2022, using as keywords: Medicinal plants, Phytotherapy and Dentistry. 216 works were identified; according to the eligibility criteria, 192 articles were excluded (57 duplicate works, 97 were not experimental research and/or literature review, and 38 articles were discarded after reading the title and abstract for not providing data on the comparison group), resulting in the final sample of 24 articles. According to the publications analyzed, several medicinal plants have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal activity against the main oral microorganisms and some of the substances mentioned can be used as an antiseptic. In addition to the proven effectiveness, herbal medicines have shown therapeutic superiority over allopathic medicines, being a viable option in the treatment and control of oral diseases, however, the knowledge of health professionals about pharmacological action, adverse effects and contraindications of herbal medicines is crucial.

Con el objetivo de realizar un levantamiento de la literatura sobre el uso de plantas medicinales para el tratamiento de trastornos bucales, este trabajo compiló artículos de investigación experimental y/o revisión de literatura, con textos completos y libres de PubMed, LILACS, SciELO y ScienceDirect , publicado en inglés o portugués, revisado por pares, durante 2018 a 2022, utilizando como palabras clave: Plantas medicinales, Fitoterapia y Odontología. Se identificaron 216 obras; De acuerdo con los criterios de elegibilidad, 192 artículos fueron excluidos (57 trabajos duplicados, 97 no eran investigación experimental y/o revisión de literatura y 38 artículos fueron descartados después de leer el título y el resumen por no proporcionar datos sobre el grupo de comparación), lo que resultó en la muestra final de 24 artículos. Según las publicaciones analizadas, varias plantas medicinales tienen actividad antimicrobiana, antiinflamatoria y antifúngica frente a los principales microorganismos orales y algunas de las sustancias mencionadas pueden ser utilizadas como antiséptico. Además de la eficacia comprobada, los medicamentos a base de hierbas han demostrado superioridad terapéutica sobre los medicamentos alopáticos, siendo una opción viable en el tratamiento y control de las enfermedades bucodentales, sin embargo, es crucial el conocimiento de los profesionales de la salud sobre la acción farmacológica, los efectos adversos y las contraindicaciones de los medicamentos a base de plantas.O emprego de fitoterápicos é uma prática milenar, reconhecida e transmitida entre gerações. Com o objetivo de realizar levantamento da literatura sobre a utilização de plantas medicinais para tratamento das afecções bucais, este trabalho compilou artigos de pesquisa experimental e/ ou revisão de literatura, com textos completos e gratuitos das bases PubMed, LILACS, SciELO e ScienceDirect, publicados em inglês ou português, revisados aos pares, durante 2018 até 2022, utilizando como palavras-chaves: Plantas medicinais, Fitoterapia e Odontologia. Foram identificados 216 trabalhos; pelos critérios de elegibilidade, foram excluídos 192 artigos (57 trabalhos duplicados, 97 não se tratava de pesquisa experimental e/ou revisão de literatura e 38 trabalhos descartados após leitura do título e resumo por não fornecerem dados sobre o grupo de comparação), resultando na amostra final de 24 artigos. Segundo as publicações analisadas, várias plantas medicinais apresentam atividade antimicrobiana, antinflamatória e antifúngica frente aos principais microrganismos orais e algumas das substâncias citadas podem ser empregadas como antisséptico.
