Diagnostic accuracy of cone beam volumetric tomography in impacted third molars in relation to the mandibular canal. Literature review

Resumo: This review aimed to determine the diagnostic accuracy of cone beam volumetric tomography compared to panoramic radiography of impacted third molars, in relation to the mandibular canal at the time of surgery and to avoid postoperative complications. A bibliographic review of the different studies published in the scientific database PubMed was carried out; Articles from the last twelve years were taken into consideration. Articles were selected using inclusion and exclusion methods, collecting a total of 16 English-language articles for final study analysis. The CBCT showed more evidence of the close relationship between the impacted third molars, the nerve and the mandibular canal, in contrast to the RP. CBCT presented greater sensitivity, being considered the radiographic examination of first choice in complex cases to avoid postoperative complications. CBCT is the optimal method to clarify the relationship that exists between the lower third molars and the CM, in a unit of measure and thus develop surgical guides for the different treatments.

Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica de los diferentes estudios publicados en la base de datos científica PubMed; se tomó en consideración a artículos de los últimos doce años. Los artículos se seleccionaron utilizando métodos de inclusión y exclusión, recopilando un total de 16 artículos en idioma inglés para el análisis final del estudio. La CBCT mostró mayor evidencia de la estrecha relación existente entre los terceros molares impactados, el nervio y el canal mandibular, en contraste con la RP. La CBCT presentó mayor sensibilidad siendo considerada como el examen radiográfico de primera elección en casos complejos para evitar complicaciones postoperatorias. La CBCT es el método óptimo para esclarecer la relación que exista entre los terceros molares inferiores y el CM, en una unidad de medida y de esta manera elaborar guías quirúrgicas para los distintos tratamientos.Esta revisão teve como objetivo determinar a acurácia diagnóstica da tomografia volumétrica de feixe cônico em comparação com a radiografia panorâmica de terceiros molares impactados, em relação ao canal mandibular no momento da cirurgia e evitar complicações pós-operatórias. Foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica dos diferentes estudos publicados na base de dados científica PubMed; Foram considerados artigos dos últimos doze anos. Os artigos foram selecionados pelos métodos de inclusão e exclusão, coletando-se um total de 16 artigos em língua inglesa para análise final do estudo. A TCFC mostrou mais evidências da estreita relação entre os terceiros molares impactados, o nervo e o canal mandibular, em contraste com o RP. A TCFC apresentou maior sensibilidade, sendo considerada o exame radiográfico de primeira escolha em casos complexos para evitar complicações pós-operatórias.
