Spirituality and religiosity in hospitalized patients with chronic pain

Resumo: Objective: The study was made to identify the influence of spirituality and religiosity by understanding the hospitalized patient`s perception. Method:  Qualitative survey founded on the Minayo content analysis. The study was made with 07 participants who have chronical pain, hospitalized in a University Hospital in the State of Parana, Brazil. Individual semi-structure interviews were taken. Results: the study findings show that most of the surveyed individuals were female, average age of 50 years. The predominant religion being Catholicism. The chronical disease being Systemic Arterial Hypertension. Four theme categories were drawn: God, daily strength source; Prayer as a sign of faith and search for comfort, duty and devotion; Religious community as support while facing the disease and the religious institution as a subterfuge for faith; The healthcare professional and the spiritual approach. Conclusion: It was notorious that religiosity/spirituality must be valued when it comes to nursing assistance, as they can be tools to improve the therapeutical process.

Método: investigación cualitativa basada en el análisis de contenido de Minayo. Se llevó a cabo con 07 participantes que sufrían de dolor crónico, ingresados en un hospital universitario de Paraná. Se realizó mediante entrevistas individuales y semiestructuradas. Resultados: se identificó que la población era mayoritariamente femenina, con una edad media de 50 años. La religión predominante era el catolicismo. La enfermedad crónica más frecuente fue la hipertensión arterial sistémica. Se sumergieron cuatro categorías temáticas: Dios, fuente de fuerza diaria; La oración como manifestación de la fe y búsqueda de consuelo, deber y devoción; La comunidad religiosa como apoyo de afrontamiento y la institución religiosa como subterfugio de la fe; El profesional de la salud y el enfoque espiritual. Conclusión: se destacó que la religiosidad/espiritualidad debe ser valorada en los cuidados de enfermería, para promover una estrategia de afrontamiento de la enfermedad.Objetivo: identificar o papel da espiritualidade e religiosidade no manejo da dor crônica em pacientes hospitalizados. Método: pesquisa qualitativa alicerçada na análise de conteúdo de Minayo. Foi realizado com 07 participantes portadores de dor crônica, internados em um hospital de ensino no Paraná. Ocorreu através de entrevistas individuais e semiestruturadas. Resultados: identificou-se que a população era, majoritariamente feminina, com idade média de 50 anos. A religião predominante foi o catolicismo. A doença crônica prevalente foi a Hipertensão Arterial Sistêmica. Submergiu-se quatro categorias temáticas: Deus, fonte de força diária; Oração como manifestações de fé e busca por conforto, dever e devoção; Comunidade religiosa como suporte de enfrentamento e a instituição religiosa como subterfúgio para a fé; O profissional de saúde e a abordagem espiritual.
