Bringing Nightingale into the 21st century: Retrospective of Nursing care from the Environmental Theory perspective

Florence Nightingale, object of research by many scholars in the world, has contributed significantly to the development of hospital health since the 18th century. The study aims to objectively reflect the academic discourse on the environment from the perspective of Nightingale applied to care for contaminated environments. This is a theoretical-reflective study, with a qualitative approach, based on the solid conceptual bases of the Environmentalist Theory of Florence Nigthingale, perennial in theoretical concepts, paradigms and official discourses of literature in the period from 1972 to 2018, properly contextualized and corroborated with the approaches recent articles on the subject published in international journals in the area of knowledge. The results show that (100%) of the studies address the theme of the environment and connect with Nightingale and (33%) highlight the evolution of technologies, however, they do not disconnect from the environment as a fundamental space for its use. The study demonstrates that the pillars of Florence Nightingale's Environmental Theory are still in force, updated regarding their concerns with the environment, care for the sick, comfort measures, prevention of contamination and diseases, showing that their theoretical and scientific bases are maintained lively and essential, over a century, notably referenced in the present, in addition to promising future influences.
