Teaching undergraduate nursing care practice in oncology: a qualitative study

Resumo: Objective: To identify the teaching of care practice in oncology from the perspective of students of an Undergraduate Nursing Course at a Federal University. Materials and methods: descriptive study with a qualitative approach, with 54 students of an Undergraduate Nursing Course at a University located in the state of Rio de Janeiro, between November 2020 and January 2021, through a virtual questionnaire. Thematic-category content analysis was performed. Results: Three categories respond to the objective: teaching strategies in oncology; themes addressed in training; and proposals from students for the qualification of teaching in oncology. Teaching strategies cover compulsory and optional subjects; in addition to extracurricular activities, focused on the content of the field of primary and hospital care. Theoretical strategies, more present than the teaching-practical strategies, were related to the stages of cancer, basic concepts of oncology and nursing practice. Conclusion: Participants showed the need to include oncology in the various disciplines that make up the curriculum and use participatory methodologies. Attention is drawn to the need for further studies that identify the teaching of oncology practice in the training of nurses, in order to qualify teaching strategies and methodologies.

Materiales y métodos: estudio descriptivo con enfoque cualitativo, con 54 estudiantes del Curso de Graduación en Enfermería de una Universidad ubicada en el estado de Río de Janeiro, entre noviembre de 2020 y enero de 2021, a través de un cuestionario virtual. Se realizó análisis de contenido por categorías temáticas. Resultados: Tres categorías responden al objetivo: estrategias de enseñanza en oncología; temas abordados en la formación; y propuestas de los estudiantes para la habilitación de la docencia en oncología. Las estrategias de enseñanza abarcan materias obligatorias y optativas; además de actividades extraescolares, enfocadas a los contenidos del ámbito de la atención primaria y hospitalaria. Las estrategias teóricas, más presentes que las estrategias didácticas-prácticas, se relacionaron con los estadios del cáncer, conceptos básicos de oncología y práctica de enfermería. Conclusión: Los participantes mostraron la necesidad de incluir la oncología en las diversas disciplinas que componen el plan de estudios y utilizar metodologías participativas. Se llama la atención sobre la necesidad de más estudios que identifiquen la enseñanza de la práctica oncológica en la formación de enfermeros, con el fin de calificar las estrategias y metodologías de enseñanza.Objetivo: Identificar o ensino da prática de cuidado em oncologia sob a ótica de discentes de um Curso de Graduação em Enfermagem de uma Universidade Federal. Materiais e métodos: estudo descritivo de abordagem qualitativa, com 54 discentes de um Curso de Graduação em Enfermagem de uma Universidade localizada no estado do Rio de Janeiro, no período entre novembro de 2020 e janeiro de 2021, através de questionário virtual. Realizou-se análise de conteúdo temático-categorial. Resultados: Três categorias respondem ao objetivo: estratégias de ensino em oncologia; temáticas abordadas na formação; e propostas de discentes para a qualificação do ensino em oncologia. As estratégias de ensino perpassam disciplinas obrigatórias e optativas; além de atividades extracurriculares, voltado ao conteúdo do campo da atenção primária e hospitalar. As estratégias teóricas, mais presentes do que as estratégias de ensino-prático, relacionaram-se aos estágios do câncer, conceitos básicos de oncologia e prática do enfermeiro. Conclusão: Os participantes apresentaram a necessidade de inserção da oncologia nas diversas disciplinas que compõem o currículo e uso de metodologias participativas.
