Resumo: Oral thrush is a common fungal infection in immunosuppressed patients. Studies demonstrate the activity of compounds from essential oils against involved microorganisms. This research carried out a literature review on the antimicrobial action of citral in species of interest to Dentistry. A search was carried out in the following databases: Pubmed, Science direct, Scielo, Lilacs and Cochrane. Articles from the last 15 years that investigated the antimicrobial and antifungal effect of citral in species of interest to Dentistry, as well as its mechanism of action and toxicity, were included. Eleven scientific articles were included for this review. Among the species studied, citral showed activity against Candida spp and bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Streptoccocus mutans, Lactobacillus spp. Its mechanism of action has not been determined, and one of the studies reported low cytotoxicity. It is concluded that citral has antimicrobial and antifungal activity in species that cause oral diseases.

Research, Society and Development2022-04-03info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/2817010.33448/rsd-v11i5.28170Research, Society and Development; Vol. 11 No. 5; e20211528170Research, Society and Development; Vol. 11 Núm. 5; e20211528170Research, Society and Development; v. 11 n. 5; e202115281702525-3409reponame:Research, Society and Developmentinstname:Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)instacron:UNIFEIporhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/28170/24476Copyright (c) 2022 Julliana Cariry Palhano Freire; Ernani Canuto Figueiredo Júnior; Waleska Ohana Souza Melo; Bruna Palmeira Costa; Adyelle Dantas Ribeiro; Josinaldo Guedes Rodrigues Júnior; Mariana Mélani Alexandrino Costa; Jozinete Vieira Pereirahttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessFreire, Julliana Cariry PalhanoFigueiredo Júnior, Ernani Canuto Melo, Waleska Ohana Souza Costa, Bruna Palmeira Ribeiro, Adyelle Dantas Rodrigues Júnior, Josinaldo Guedes Costa, Mariana Mélani Alexandrino Pereira, Jozinete Vieira 2022-04-17T18:18:56Zoai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/28170Revistahttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/indexPUBhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/oairsd.articles@gmail.com2525-34092525-3409opendoar:2024-01-17T09:45:40.216453Research, Society and Development - Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)false
