The use of bioceramic cements and their applicability in endodontics: literature review

Resumo: | Among the various factors that influence the effectiveness of endodontic treatment, the filling material plays an important role. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of bioceramic cements and their applicability in endodontics. An integrative literature review of the literature was carried out in order to synthesize the knowledge pertaining to the theme. The research was carried out in the databases of Pubmed Medicine and CAPES Periodicals between the years 2015 and 2020, having as descriptors: “Biocompatible Materials”, “Endodontics” and “Silicate Cement”. Thirty-four scientific productions that met the inclusion criteria and were selected. The use of new bioceramic cements has shown a broad clinical applicability, in addition to having excellent properties, such as: ability to bond to dentin, good radiopacity, better handling conditions, appropriate setting time, bactericidal activity and bioactivity; moreover, they did not cause stains on the dental structures. However, the permanence of some deficiencies, such as the total removal of cement in the root canal and the high cost, points to the need for more research that explores the physical and chemical properties of these materials in the long term, in order to stimulate the making constant improvements in their compositions and making it possible to overcome the remaining deficiencies. |

El objetivo del presente estudio fue evaluar la efectividad de los cementos biocerámicos y su aplicabilidad en endodoncia. Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica integradora de la literatura con el fin de sintetizar los conocimientos pertenecientes al tema. La investigación se realizó en las bases de datos de Medicina Pubmed y Revistas CAPES entre los años 2015 y 2020, teniendo como descriptores: “Materiales Biocompatibles”, “Endodoncia” y “Cemento Silicato”. Treinta y cuatro producciones científicas que cumplieron con los criterios de inclusión y fueron seleccionadas. El uso de nuevos cementos biocerámicos ha mostrado una amplia aplicabilidad clínica, además de tener excelentes propiedades, tales como: capacidad de adhesión a la dentina, buena radiopacidad, mejores condiciones de manipulación, tiempo de fraguado adecuado, actividad bactericida y bioactividad; además, no produjeron manchas en las estructuras dentales. Sin embargo, la permanencia de algunas deficiencias, como la remoción total de cemento en el conducto radicular y el alto costo, apunta a la necesidad de más investigaciones que exploren las propiedades físicas y químicas de estos materiales a largo plazo, con el fin de estimular la realizando mejoras constantes en sus composiciones y permitiendo superar las deficiencias restantes.Dentre os diversos fatores que influenciam a eficácia do tratamento endodôntico, o material obturador apresenta um importante papel. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar a eficácia dos cimentos biocerâmicos e a sua aplicabilidade na endodontia. Foi realizada uma revisão literatura integrativa da literatura com o intuito de sintetizar os conhecimentos pertencentes ao tema. A pesquisa foi realizada nas bases de dados da Pubmed Medicine e Periódicos CAPES entre os anos de 2015 e 2020, tendo como descritores: “Materiais Biocompatíveis”, “Endodontia” e “Cimento de Silicato”. Trinta e quatro produções científicas que atenderam aos critérios de inclusão e foram selecionados. A utilização dos novos cimentos biocerâmicos evidenciaram uma abrangente aplicabilidade clínica, além de possuírem excelentes propriedades, tais como: capacidade de união à dentina, boa radiopacidade, melhores condições de manipulação, tempo de presa apropriado, atividade bactericida e a bioatividade; além disso, não ocasionaram manchas nas estruturas dentárias.
