Alternatives solutions to reduce Parkinson’s disease pathological tremors: A state-of-art review

Resumo: | Parkinson's disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the world, with tremor being one of its main symptoms. The existing treatments for tremors have several restrictions and side effects that end up limiting their use. Thus, the idea of alternative treatments, using engineering, arises, which are less invasive and without side effects. The scope of this work will be to present and discuss the main solutions involving engineering for the reduction of pathological tremors that have been found in recent years. For the purpose of following a research methodology, keywords were used to perform searches in some of the main scientific databases, and with some filters applied it was possible to identify 26 articles dealing with the topic we wish to study. As a result, it was possible to notice a considerable increase in the study of the subject in recent years and to observe the existence of 4 categories of alternative treatments: functional electrical stimulation (FES), mechanical actuators, damped systems, and intelligent materials. After the research, it was concluded that the solutions using FES and mechanical actuators were the most studied and those that are in more advanced stages of testing, having products on the market that use FES as a treatment for pathological tremors. |

Los tratamientos existentes para los temblores tienen varias restricciones y efectos secundarios que terminan limitando su uso. Surge así la idea de tratamientos alternativos, mediante la ingeniería, menos invasivos y sin efectos secundarios. El alcance de este trabajo será presentar y discutir las principales soluciones de ingeniería para la reducción de temblores patológicos que se han encontrado en los últimos años. Con el propósito de seguir una metodología de investigación, se utilizaron palabras clave para realizar búsquedas en algunas de las principales bases de datos científicas, y con algunos filtros aplicados fue posible identificar 26 artículos que tratan el tema que deseamos estudiar. Como resultado, se pudo notar un aumento considerable en el estudio sobre el tema en los últimos años y observar la existencia de 4 categorias de tratamientos alternativos: estimulación eléctrica funcional (FES), actuadores mecánicos, sistemas amortiguados y materiales inteligentes. Tras la investigación, se concluyó que las soluciones que utilizan FES y actuadores mecánicos fueron las más estudiadas y las que se encuentran en etapas más avanzadas de pruebas, teniendo en el mercado productos que utilizan FES como tratamiento de temblores patológicos.A doença de Parkinson é a segunda doença neurodegenerativa mais comum do mundo, sendo o tremor um dos seus principais sintomas. Os tratamentos existentes para o tremor possuem diversas restrições e efeitos colaterais que acabam limitando seu uso. Dessa forma surge a ideia de tratamentos alternativos, usando a engenharia, que sejam menos invasivos e sem efeitos colaterais. O escopo deste trabalho será apresentar e discutir as principais soluções envolvendo a engenharia para a redução de tremores patológicos que foram encontradas nos últimos anos. Para fins de seguir uma metodologia de pesquisa, foram utilizadas palavras-chaves para realizar buscas em alguns dos principais bancos de dados científicos, e com alguns filtros aplicados foi possível identificar 26 artigos que tratam sobre o tema que desejamos estudar. Como resultados foi possível perceber um aumento considerável do estudo sobre o tema nos últimos anos e observar a existência de 4 categorias de tratamentos alternativos: estimulação elétrica funcional (FES), atuadores mecânicos, sistemas amortecidos e materiais inteligentes.
