Resumo: Brazil is the leader country in ethanol production. Advances in technology of biofuel production have been driven by worldwide factors. One of the factors was the National Alcohol Program (Proálcool) creation by the federal government in 1973. Since then, Brazilian researchers have begun studies to optimize the production chain which led Brazil to the top in the international panorama. The main results were: i) a 73% increase in agricultural productivity, a 77% reduction in fermentation time and an increase of 44 times in the annual ethanol production; ii) self-sufficiency and selling the electric energy produced by the bagasse burning; iii) Low cost of ethanol production compared to North American production cost. As of 2010, even with intense scientific production, gains in productivity have become reduced. In order for Brazil to continue at the highest levels in the world ranking of ethanol producers, it will be necessary to overcome the following challenges:  i) To study the economic viability of second generation ethanol production; and ii) to build up more biorefineries that convert ethanol into higher value-added molecules.

Research, Society and Development2018-02-19info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/27010.17648/rsd-v7i2.270Research, Society and Development; Vol. 7 No. 2; e1472195Research, Society and Development; Vol. 7 Núm. 2; e1472195Research, Society and Development; v. 7 n. 2; e14721952525-3409reponame:Research, Society and Developmentinstname:Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)instacron:UNIFEIporhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/270/239Copyright (c) 2018 Andres Rosello Gimenez, Luiz Guilherme Altopiedi, Nicolás Versolato Carballo, Leila Cristina Magalhães Silva, Cleber Wanderlei Liriainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessGimenez, Andres RoselloAltopiedi, Luiz GuilhermeCarballo, Nicolás VersolatoSilva, Leila Cristina MagalhãesLiria, Cleber Wanderlei2019-01-22T01:13:01Zoai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/270Revistahttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/indexPUBhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/oairsd.articles@gmail.com2525-34092525-3409opendoar:2024-01-17T09:25:52.455514Research, Society and Development - Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)false
