Temporal and epidemiological evaluation of meningitis reports in the State of Paraíba, Brazil

Resumo: The epidemiology of meningitis has worldwide distribution and its expression depends on different factors, such as the infectious agent, the existence of population clusters, socioeconomic characteristics of population groups and the environment. The present study aimed to analyze the cases of meningitis reported from 2008 to 2017 according to their evolution, etiology and age group affected in the state of Paraíba. Data were collected from the notification platform Sinan - Notification Disorders Information System. From the results obtained, it was observed that of the 822 cases reported in the ten years analyzed 14.82% resulted in death from the disease. It was observed that meningitis affects a varied age group of the population, being under 5 to 9 and adults from 20 to 39 years, the age group most affected by the disease. Additionally, children under 1 year to 4 years old presented relevant data, being an age group that should be considered in the epidemiological aspect.

El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo analizar los casos de meningitis reportados de 2008 a 2017 de acuerdo con su evolución, etiología y grupo de edad afectados en el estado de Paraíba. Los datos fueron recolectados de la plataforma de notificación Sinan - Sistema de Información de Trastornos de Notificación. De los resultados obtenidos, se observó que de los 822 casos reportados en los diez años analizados, el 14.82% resultó en muerte por la enfermedad. Se observó que la meningitis afecta a un grupo de edad variado de la población, siendo menores de 5 a 9 años y adultos de 20 a 39 años, el grupo de edad más afectado por la enfermedad. Además, los niños menores de 1 año a 4 años presentaron datos relevantes, siendo un grupo de edad que debe considerarse en el aspecto epidemiológico.A epidemiologia das meningites tem distribuição mundial e sua expressão depende de diferentes fatores, como o agente infeccioso, a existência de aglomerados populacionais, características socioeconômicas dos grupos populacionais e do meio ambiente. O presente estudo objetivou analisar os casos de meningite notificados no estado da Paraíba, no período de 2008 a 2017 de acordo com sua evolução, etiologia e faixa etária acometida. Os dados foram coletados a partir do Sistema de Informação de Agravos de Notificação (SINAN). Por meio dos resultados obtidos, observou-se que, dos 822 casos notificados nos dez anos analisados 14,82% resultaram em óbito pela doença. Observou-se que a meningite acomete uma variada faixa etária da população, sendo menores de 5 a 9 e adultos de 20 a 39 anos, a faixa etária mais atingida pela doença.
