Resumo: Smoking is associated with unfavorable outcomes in COVID-19. Smokers are more vulnerable to respiratory viruses than non-smokers, with a greater risk of serious influenza infection in smokers, who also have more severe clinical conditions. With this, the present research aims to describe the main risks of the relationship between smoking and COVID-19. This is an integrative review. To carry out this study, the following databases were consulted: Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Google Scholar and Scientific Eletronic Library Online (SCIELO). The Health Sciences Descriptors (DeCS) were used in an associated way: “Smokers”, “Tobacco Use Disorder”, “COVID-19” and “Complications”. After applying the inclusion criteria, 8 studies remained. The included studies were tabulated and critical and corroborative reviews were made between each of them. Smoking increases the risk of complications from numerous diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases (bronchitis and emphysema) and several types of cancer, in addition to causing different types of inflammation, impairing the body's defense mechanisms, which certainly weakens the immune system, making it less able to respond effectively to infections.

Research, Society and Development2020-08-13info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/698110.33448/rsd-v9i9.6981Research, Society and Development; Vol. 9 No. 9; e84996981Research, Society and Development; Vol. 9 Núm. 9; e84996981Research, Society and Development; v. 9 n. 9; e849969812525-3409reponame:Research, Society and Developmentinstname:Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)instacron:UNIFEIporhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/article/view/6981/6207Copyright (c) 2020 Rafael Everton Assunção Ribeiro da Costahttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessCosta, Rafael Everton Assunção Ribeiro daPaulo, Sabrina Amorim Vieira, Andressa Lages Balsamo, Ana Cândida Martins Brito, Ana Cláudia Silva Mesquita, Maxkson Messias de Souza, Daiane Borges Souza, Isadora Lima dePedroso, André Luiz de Oliveira Müller, Pammela Cristhynne Tôrres Rodrigues, Keuri SilvaLeal, Thaylana Lysle Silva Lima Sipaúba, Taylane Sá Mendes, Annarelly Morais Barroso, Igor Dias Torres, Iara Leal 2020-09-18T01:42:11Zoai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/6981Revistahttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/indexPUBhttps://rsdjournal.org/index.php/rsd/oairsd.articles@gmail.com2525-34092525-3409opendoar:2024-01-17T09:29:53.063346Research, Society and Development - Universidade Federal de Itajubá (UNIFEI)false
