Tooth discoloration caused by endodontic cements: a literature review

Resumo: Objective: The objective of this work was to identify which is the main endodontic cement that promotes tooth discoloration, in addition to showing which other paths can be followed to avoid aesthetic damage to the treated tooth. Methodology: A search was carried out in English for articles through the PubMed, MedLine, Cochrane and Lilacs databases, from 2005 to 2020. Results: It was observed that most of the tested cement promoted color changes, especially materials based on zinc oxide-eugenol and mineral trioxide aggregate, when applied to anterior teeth, due to the thin structure of this tooth. This is because-of the chemical components present in these materials. The bioceramic components are the ones that promote fewer alterations when compared to the other materials mentioned in this study. Final Considerations: Proper cleaning of the pulp chamber is essential to avoid tooth discoloration after endodontic treatment. Internal tooth whitening and the use of dentin adhesive agents may be alternatives to improve esthetics due to tooth darkening caused by endodontic obturators.

Metodología: Se realizó una búsqueda en inglés de artículos a través de la base de datos PubMed, MedLine, Cochrane y Lilacs, desde 2005 hasta 2020. Resultados: Se observó que la mayoría de los cementos probados promovieron cambios de color, especialmente los materiales a base de óxido de zinc- agregado de eugenol y trióxido mineral, cuando se aplica a los dientes anteriores, debido a la estructura delgada de este diente. Esto se debe a los componentes químicos presentes en estos materiales. Los componentes biocerámicos son los que menos alteraciones promueven, en comparación con los demás materiales mencionados en este estudio. Consideraciones finales: La limpieza adecuada de la cámara pulpar es fundamental para evitar la decoloración de los dientes después del tratamiento de endodoncia. El blanqueamiento dental interno y el uso de adhesivo dentinario pueden ser alternativas para mejorar la estética debido al oscurecimiento de los dientes causado por los obturadores endodónticos.Objetivo: O objetivo deste trabalho foi o de identificar quais são os principais cimentos endodônticos que promovem a alteração de cor dental, além de mostrar quais outros caminhos podem ser seguidos, a fim de evitar o prejuízo estético do dente tratado. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma busca em inglês dos artigos através da base de dados PubMed, MedLine, Cochrane e Lilacs, no período de 2005 a 2020. Resultados: Observou-se que a maioria dos cimentos testados promoveram alterações de cor, especialmente materiais à base de óxido de zinco-eugenol e agregado trióxido mineral, quando aplicados em dentes anteriores, devido à estrutura delgada desse dente. Isso ocorre devido a componentes químicos presentes nesses materiais. Os componentes biocerâmicos são os que promovem menores alterações, quando comparados aos outros materiais citados neste estudo. Considerações Finais: A adequada limpeza da câmara pulpar é fundamental para evitar a descoloração dental após o tratamento endodôntico.
