Evaluation of the epidemiological profile of Hepatitis A in the regions of Brazil between 2012 and 2021

Objective: to trace the epidemiological profile of HAV in Brazilian regions between 2012 and 2021, quantify the cases, mortality and hepatitis A vaccine coverage in Brazil, as well as the impact on the affected population. Methods: The study is retrospective, descriptive and ecological, which used data from SIM/DataSUS, SI-PNI/DataSUS, SINAN/DataSUS, from the Painel de Saneamento do Brasil and from Sistema Nacional de Informações de Saneamento (SINAN) period from 2012 to 2021. Results: There was a higher incidence and prevalence in men, adults and the elderly throughout the country, especially in regions where the consumption of untreated water and inefficient sanitation are more evident, as in the North and Northeast. An addition in the route of transmission of the virus with oral-anal sexual route is also emphasized on the age group of adult men. Moreover, although the vaccination range proves to be efficient, it also shows numbers to be improved, including the vaccine in the Plano Nacional de Imunização (PNI) of the elderly. Conclusion: It is warned that only improvements in sanitary conditions are not enough to eradicate a disease, vaccination, more careful habits with health and healthier behaviors are fundamental to achieve this goal.
