Regulatory frameworks and the role of the pharmacist in the veterinary drug market for companion animals: integrative review

Resumo: Objective: To investigate evidence on the role of pharmacists in the market of veterinary medicines for companion animals and their regulatory frameworks. Method: This is an integrative review, with the period between 2016 and 2021 as a time frame. Results: Eighteen articles were retrieved. There was evidence on the role of the pharmacist in the veterinary drug market for companion animals. Pharmaceutical services, such as pharmaceutical care, applied to the quality use of medicines for veterinary, have market potential. Furthermore, it is an essential requirement that he is qualified – with appropriate training – to handle veterinary prescriptions and companion animals. It also requires professional integration with veterinarians. Conclusion: It is recognized that the field of action of the veterinary pharmacist is promising. However, there is much to be improved in the field of regulatory frameworks, especially in terms of professional conduct in a market with different specificities; that is, races, genders, species, among others; requiring different knowledge to offer pharmaceutical services with quality and safety.

Método: Se trata de una revisión integradora, teniendo como marco temporal el período comprendido entre 2016 y 2021. Resultados: Se recuperaron 18 artículos. Hubo evidencia sobre el papel del farmacéutico en el mercado de medicamentos veterinarios para animales de compañía. Los servicios farmacéuticos, como la atención farmacéutica, aplicados al uso de calidad de medicamentos veterinario, tienen potencial de mercado. Además, es requisito indispensable que esté capacitado -con la formación adecuada- para el manejo de prescripciones veterinarias y animales de compañía. También requiere integración profesional con los veterinarios. Conclusión: Se reconoce que el campo de actuación del farmacéutico veterinario es prometedor. Sin embargo, hay mucho por mejorar en el campo de los marcos regulatorios, especialmente en términos de conducta profesional en un mercado con diferentes especificidades; es decir, razas, géneros, especies, entre otros; requiriendo diferentes conocimientos para ofrecer servicios farmacéuticos con calidad y seguridad.Objetivo: Investigar evidências sobre a atuação do farmacêutico no mercado de medicamentos veterinários para animais de companhia e seus marcos regulatórios. Método: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa, tendo como recorte temporal o período entre os anos de 2016 e 2021. Resultados: Dezoito artigos foram recuperados. Observou-se evidências sobre a atuação do farmacêutico no mercado de medicamentos veterinários para animais de companhia. Serviços farmacêuticos, a exemplo do cuidado farmacêutico, aplicado ao uso com qualidade de medicamentos veterinário, tem potencial mercado. Outrossim, é requisito essencial que o mesmo esteja qualificado – com formação apropriada – para lidar com prescrições veterinárias e com animais de companhia. Requer, ainda, uma integração profissional com os médicos veterinários. Conclusão: Reconhece-se, que o campo de atuação do farmacêutico veterinário é promissor.
