Emergence and the initial form of seedlings of Cenostigma pyramidale (Fabaceae) under saline stress

Resumo: | Environmental stresses can influence the germination and initial growth of plant species. The understanding of these responses can contribute to the understanding of the establishment of species in the environment or even, subsidize the production of seedlings. This study investigated the influence of salinity on twinning and biometrics in the early stages of Cenostigma pyramidale. The study was carried out at the Academic Unit of Serra, Serra Talhada - Pernambuco. The seeds of Cenostigma pyramidale (Tul.) Gagnon & G.P. Lewis were submitted to pre-germinative treatments by means of mechanical scarification with wooden sandpaper No. 150. Then the treated seeds were sown in cell trays made of polypropylene containing soil and a thin superficial layer of vermiculite for the emergence of seedlings. Upon sowing, the species was submitted to three levels of salinity: N1 - 0.18 (CONTROL); N2 - 1.52 and N3 - 2.22 dS.m-1. The adopted design was completely randomized with four replications. Water replenishment was performed daily, as well as counting the number of seedlings that emerged. With these data it was obtained: percentage of seedling emergence (PE) and the emergence speed index (IVE). Additionally, height (ALT), collar diameter (DIAM), number of fully expanded leaves (NFCE) and dry plant biomass (BST) were obtained. Our results showed that the increase in salinity levels promoted reductions in IVE and PE of Cenostigma pyramidale seeds. However, no changes were observed in the biometric aspects and the initial biomass accumulation of the species. |

La comprensión de estas respuestas puede contribuir a la comprensión del establecimiento de especies en el medio o incluso, subsidiar la producción de plántulas. Este estudio investigó la influencia de la salinidad en el hermanamiento y la biometría en las primeras etapas de Cenostigma pyramidale. El estudio se realizó en la Unidad Académica de Serra, Serra Talhada - Pernambuco. Las semillas de Cenostigma pyramidale se sometió a tratamientos pregerminativos mediante escarificación mecánica con papel de lija de madera No. 150. Luego, las semillas tratadas se sembraron en bandejas de celdas hechas de polipropileno que contenía tierra y una fina capa superficial de vermiculita para la emergencia de las plántulas. Al sembrar, la especie se sometió a tres niveles de salinidad: N1 - 0.18 (CONTROL); N2 - 1,52 y N3 - 2,22 dS m-1. El diseño adoptado fue completamente aleatorio con cuatro repeticiones. La reposición de agua se realizó diariamente, además de contar el número de plántulas que emergieron. Con estos datos se obtuvo: porcentaje de emergencia de plántulas (PE) y el índice de velocidad de emergencia (IVE). Además, se obtuvo la altura (ALT), el diámetro del tallo (DC), el número de hojas completamente expandidas (NFCE) y la biomasa vegetal seca (BST). Nuestros resultados mostraron que el aumento en los niveles de salinidad promovió reducciones en IVE y PE de semillas de Cenostigma pyramidale. Sin embargo, no se observaron cambios en los aspectos biométricos y la acumulación inicial de biomasa de la especie.Estresses ambientais podem influenciar na germinação e crescimento inicial de espécies vegetais. Este estudo investigou a influência da salinidade na geminação e biometria nos estádios iniciais de Cenostigma pyramidale. O estudo foi realizado na Unidade Acadêmica de Serra, Serra Talhada – Pernambuco. As sementes de Cenostigma pyramidale foram submetidas ao tratamento pré-germinativo por meio da escarificação mecânica com lixa de madeira nº 150. Em seguida as sementes tratadas foram semeadas em bandejas de células constituídas de polipropileno contendo solo e uma fina camada superficial de vermiculita para a emergência das plântulas. Mediante a semeadura, a espécie foi submetida à três níveis de salinidade: N1 - 0,18 (CONTROLE); N2 - 1,52 e N3 - 2,22 dS m-1. O delineamento adotado foi inteiramente casualizado com quatro repetições. As reposições de água foram realizadas diariamente, assim como as contagens do número de plântulas emergidas. Com estes dados obtiveram-se: porcentagem de emergência de plântulas (PE) e o índice de velocidade de emergência (IVE). Adicionalmente, foram obtidas altura (ALT), diâmetro do coleto (DC), número de folhas completamente expandidas (NFCE) e a biomassa seca total das plantas (BST). Nossos resultados mostraram que o aumento nos níveis de salinidade promoveu reduções no IVE e na PE das sementes de Cenostigma pyramidale.
