Poliomyelitis: Vaccine Coverage in Southeastern Brazil

Resumo: | Objective: Analyze polio vaccine coverage in southeast Brazil between 2011 and 2020. Methods: This is a retrospective, descriptive and longitudinal study, with a quantitative approach. The population of the study was individuals vaccinated against poliomyelitis in the Southeast region of Brazil, from 2011 to 2020. To carry out the research, the database of the National Immunization Program using the registration of vaccines available in DATASUS, with subsequent descriptive analysis of the variables obtained. Results: Were observed that the state of Rio de Janeiro had the biggest vaccine coverage from all southeastern states in 2011, but also the lowest in 2020. Moreover, we had a decrease in vaccine coverage in all states amongst 2015 and 2016. In terms of applied doses of IPV and OPV, we had a decline in total quantity from 2011 to 2014, resulting from the reduction of OVP use in this period. Additionally, applications of IVP surpassed OVP in 2015, being the main immunobiological until 2020. Besides, São Paulo had the majority of applied doses in all years, being 2011 the biggest. Lastly, all the doses had numerousness in people younger than one year. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study has shown that the immunizations in southeast Brazil have huge variety between states. As a result, each location requires a specific strategic plan due to different problems in vaccine coverage depending on the location. However, more studies on this area are necessary in order to understand deeply the reason for the decrease in vaccine coverage in certain periods. |

Métodos: Este es un estudio retrospectivo, descriptivo y longitudinal, con abordaje cuantitativo, cuya población se constituyó de individuos vacunados contra la poliomielitis en la Región Sureste de Brasil, entre los años de 2011 y 2020. En la realización de esta pesquisa se utilizó la base de datos del Programa Nacional de Inmunizaciones, referente al registro de vacunas disponible en el DATASUS, y posterior análisis descriptivo de las variables obtenidas. Resultados: en 2011 el Estado de Rio de Janeiro fue el que presentó mayor número de vacunados y, en 2020 el menor número en la Región Sureste. En 2015 y 2016 ocurrió significativa disminución de la cantidad de vacunados en todos los Estados. Además, fue evidente la reducción en la cantidad total de aplicaciones de VIP y VOP entre los años de 2011 a 2014, habiendo ocurrido, en el mismo periodo, disminución del número de inmunizaciones por VOP. Las aplicaciones de VIP aumentaron a partir de 2015, manteniéndose predominantes hasta 2020. En 2011, el Estado de São Paulo alcanzó la mayor cantidad de dosis aplicadas, habiendo sido 2011 el año con mayor número de aplicaciones. Finalmente, ocurrió predominio de aplicaciones de todas las dosis en menores de un año. Conclusiones: Se identificó importante reducción en el número de vacunas aplicadas, además de heterogeneidad espacial en los diferentes estados del Sureste. Nuevos estudios sobre el tema serán necesarios para comprender con más detalles los factores asociados a tales quedas de cobertura vacunal.Objetivo: Analisar a cobertura vacinal da poliomielite na região sudeste do Brasil, no período de 2011 a 2020. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo retrospectivo, descritivo e longitudinal, com abordagem quantitativa, que teve como população os indivíduos vacinados contra poliomielite na região Sudeste do Brasil, no período de 2011 a 2020. Para realização da pesquisa, foi utilizada a base de dados do Programa Nacional de Imunizações, referente ao registro de vacinas disponibilizado pelo DATASUS, com posterior análise descritiva das variáveis obtidas. Resultados: 2011 no Rio de Janeiro foi o que apresentou maior cobertura vacinal e em 2020, a menor cobertura da região sudeste. Ocorreu uma diminuição significativa da cobertura vacinal em todos os estados de 2015 a 2016 Além disso, foi evidenciado redução no valor total de aplicações de VIP e VOP entre os anos 2011 a 2014, ocorrendo, no mesmo período, diminuição da quantidade de imunizações pela VOP. Teve ascendência das aplicações da VIP a partir de 2015, ficando predominantes até 2020. Em 2011, São Paulo teve a maior quantidade de doses aplicadas, sendo 2011 o ano com mais aplicações. Por fim, ocorreu predomínio de aplicações de todas as doses em menores que um ano. Conclusões: Foi identificado uma importante redução da cobertura vacinal, além de uma heterogeneidade espacial nos diferentes estados do Sudeste.
