Ethnopharmacological study of Anacardium occidentale: a brief review

Resumo: Introduction: Anacardium occidentale, popularly known as cashew, is a plant native to Brazil and has been widely used by the population due to its medicinal properties. Objective: To carry out a bibliographic search to show the profile of the use of A. occidentale as a medicinal plant and to correlate this information with experimental research that shows the biological potentials of this plant. Methodology: This is a narrative-type literature review. The search for articles occurred in the Lilacs, Scielo and Periódicos Capes databases, using the terms: 1) Anacardium occidentale; 2) Cashew tree and 3) Biological Activities, using the Boolean operators “AND” and “OR”. Results: Of 40 studies analyzed, 17 were used to compose the results. It was evidenced the use of cashew by different populations for the treatment of inflammation, stroke, injuries, diarrhea, infections, headache, toothache, hangover, as an astringent, anticoagulant, anti-flu, antipyretic and healing. Among these indications, anti-inflammatory, healing, anti-diarrheal, anti-flu and antimicrobials stand out, due to the existence of experimental studies proving these different biological potentials. Extracts of fruits, leaves and stem, demonstrate anti-inflammatory potential. The bark extract has healing potential, due to the presence of phenolic compounds, which seem to favor tissue reconstruction, due to its healing, antibacterial effects and because it influences mediators involved in inflammation. Regarding the antidiarrheal potential, studies with stem bark extract and A. occidentale gum showed reduced gastrointestinal transit, increased water and electrolyte reabsorption and delayed onset of diarrhea. In addition, high amounts of flavonoids and moderate amounts of alkaloids and tannins were obtained. As for the anti-flu activity, a promising anti-influenza activity was observed, through the ability to inhibit the neuraminidase enzyme and inhibit viral replication in mice. Antimicrobial activity was verified in Gram-positive and negative bacteria and fungi, being associated with the presence of alkaloids and tannins. Conclusion: Thus, it is understood that the cashew tree has a range of therapeutic indications in popular use, among which stands out its potential in anti-inflammatory, scarring, anti-diarrheal, anti-flu and anti-microbial processes, however it is worth mentioning that more research is needed clarify the possible mechanisms involved.

Objetivo: realizar una búsqueda bibliográfica para mostrar el perfil del uso de A. occidentale como planta medicinal y correlacionar esta información con investigaciones experimentales que muestren los potenciales biológicos de esta planta. Metodología: Esta es una revisión de literatura de tipo narrativo. La búsqueda de artículos ocurrió en las bases de datos de Lilacs, Scielo y Periódicos Capes, usando los términos: 1) Anacardium occidentale; 2) anacardo y 3) Actividades biológicas, utilizando los operadores booleanos "AND" y "OR". Resultados: De 40 estudios analizados, 17 fueron utilizados para componer los resultados. Se evidenció el uso de anacardo por diferentes poblaciones para el tratamiento de inflamación, accidente cerebrovascular, lesiones, diarrea, infecciones, dolor de cabeza, dolor de muelas, resaca, como astringente, anticoagulante, antigripal, antipirético y curativo. Entre estas indicaciones, destacan los antiinflamatorios, curativos, antidiarreicos, antigripales y antimicrobianos, debido a la existencia de estudios experimentales que prueban estos diferentes potenciales biológicos. Los extractos de frutas, hojas y tallo demuestran potencial antiinflamatorio. El extracto de corteza tiene potencial curativo, debido a la presencia de compuestos fenólicos, que parecen favorecer la reconstrucción del tejido, debido a sus efectos curativos, antibacterianos y porque influye en los mediadores involucrados en la inflamación. Con respecto al potencial antidiarreico, los estudios con extracto de corteza de tallo y goma de mascar A. occidentale mostraron un tránsito gastrointestinal reducido, un aumento de la reabsorción de agua y electrolitos y un inicio tardío de la diarrea. Además, se obtuvieron altas cantidades de flavonoides y cantidades moderadas de alcaloides y taninos. En cuanto a la actividad anti-gripe, se observó una actividad anti-gripe prometedora, a través de la capacidad de inhibir la enzima neuraminidasa e inhibir la replicación viral en ratones. Se encontró actividad antimicrobiana en bacterias y hongos Gram-positivos y negativos, estando asociada con la presencia de alcaloides y taninos. Conclusión: Por lo tanto, se entiende que el anacardo tiene una gama de indicaciones terapéuticas de uso popular, entre las que destaca su potencial en procesos antiinflamatorios, cicatrizantes, antidiarreicos, antigripales y antimicrobianos, sin embargo, vale la pena mencionar que se necesita más investigación. aclarar los posibles mecanismos involucrados.Introdução: Anacardium occidentale, conhecida popularmente como cajueiro, é uma planta nativa do Brasil e tem sido amplamente utilizada pela população devido suas propriedades medicinais. Objetivo: Realizar uma pesquisa bibliográfica para se evidenciar o perfil de utilização de A. occidentale como planta medicinal e correlacionar essas informações com pesquisas experimentais que evidenciem os potenciais biológicos desse vegetal. Metodologia:  Trata-se de uma revisão de literatura do tipo narrativa. A busca de artigos ocorreu nas bases de dados Lilacs, Scielo e Periódicos Capes, por meio dos termos: 1) Anacardium occidentale; 2) Cajueiro e 3) Atividades Biológicas, utilizando-se os operadores booleanos “AND” e “OR”. Resultados: De 40 estudos analisados, 17 foram utilizados para compor os resultados. Evidenciou-se, o uso do cajueiro por diferentes populações para o tratamento de inflamações, acidente cerebrovascular, ferimentos, diarreia, infecções, cefaleia, odontalgia, ressaca, como adstringente, anticoagulante, antigripal, antitérmico e cicatrizante. Dentre essas indicações, destacam-se anti-inflamatória, cicatrizante, antidiarreica, antigripal e antimicrobiana, devido a existência de estudos experimentais comprovando esses diferentes potenciais biológicos. Extratos de frutos, folhas e caule, demostram potencial anti-inflamatório. O extrato de cascas apresenta potencial cicatrizante, devido a presença de compostos fenólicos, que parecem favorecer a reconstrução tecidual, por seus efeitos cicatrizante, antibacteriano e por exercer influência sobre mediadores envolvidos na inflamação. Com relação ao potencial antidiarreico, estudos com extrato de cascas de caule e com goma de A. occidentale demonstraram redução do trânsito gastrintestinal, aumento da reabsorção de água e eletrólitos e retardo do início da diarreia. Ademais, foram obtidas quantidades elevadas de flavonoides e moderada de alcaloides e taninos. Quanto à atividade antigripal, observou-se uma promissora atividade anti-influenza, mediante a capacidade de inibir a enzima neuraminidase e inibir a replicação viral em camundongos. A atividade antimicrobiana, foi verificada em bactérias Gram-positivas e negativas e fungos, sendo associada à presença de alcaloides e taninos.
