Evaluation of the physical and mechanical properties of paricá wood (Schizolobium amazonicum) used in the plywood industry in the State of Maranhão

Resumo: Paricá (Schizolobium amazonicum) is an amazon tropical specie with interesting physical and mechanical properties for the plywood and laminated veneer lumber industries. The aim of this pape is to assess paricá timber physical and mechanical properties used in plywood industry in the Maranhão State. Moisture content, basic and apparent densities, volumetric variation, compression strengths parallel and perpendicular to grain, shear strength, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in bending, as well as modulus of compression parallel to grain were assessed. Results showed na equilibrium timber moisture content of 11,33%, a low apparent density (275,57 kg.m-3) and reduced volumetric variation (8,75%). Physical properties results were belllow than those found in the papers which considered the same specie and age. Mechanical properties assessed (compression strengths parallel and perpendicular to grain, shear strength, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity in bending, as well as modulus of compression parallel to grain were assessed) were also bellow average values given by literature review. Thus, paricá plywood panels are a valid alternative in comparison with similar products made of Eucalyptus, due to lower weight and dimensional stability. However, it is important to carry out actions that aim to improve the mechanical properties of paricá wood, in order to increase its strength and stiffness properties.

El objetivo de este trabajo es evaluar las propiedades físicas y mecánicas de la madera de paricá utilizada en la industria de contrachapados en el Estado de Maranhão. Se analizaron la humedad, las densidades aparente y básica, la variación volumétrica, las resistencias a la compresión paralela y perpendicular al grano, la resistencia al corte, la resistencia a la flexión y el módulo de elasticidad en compresión paralela a la fibra y en flexión. El lote de madera analizado presentó contenido de humedad en equilibrio en el aire (11,33%), densidad aparente baja (275,57 kg.m-3) y variación volumétrica reducida (8,75%), estando estas propiedades por debajo de los valores presentados por la bibliografía, para maderas de edades similares. Las propiedades mecánicas analizadas (resistencia a la compresión paralela al grano, resistencia a la compresión normal al grano, módulo de ruptura a la flexión, módulo de elasticidad a la flexión, resistencia al corte paralelo al grano y módulo de elasticidad a la compresión paralelo al grano) también se presentan valores inferiores a la media de los resultados obtenidos en la bibliografía. Por lo tanto, el uso de madera de paricá en paneles de madera contrachapada es una alternativa válida, considerando que son livianos y estables en términos de variación dimensional, en comparación con los productos elaborados con madera de eucalipto. Sin embargo, es pertinente realizar acciones que apunten a mejorar las propiedades mecánicas de la madera de paricá, con el fin de incrementar sus propiedades de resistencia y rigidez.O paricá (Schizolobium amazonicum) é uma espécie nativa da região amazônica, cujas características físicas e mecânicas estão na base da aceitação desta espécie por parte do mercado madeireiro, sobretudo através da sua utilização para produção de painéis de compensado e painéis de lâminas paralelas (LVL). O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar as propriedades físicas e mecânicas da madeira de paricá utilizadas na indústria de compensados no Estado do Maranhão. Foram analisados o teor de umidade, as densidades aparente e básica, a variação volumétrica, as resistências à compressão paralela e perpendicular à grã, a resistência ao cisalhamento paralelo à grã, a resistência à flexão e os módulos de elasticidade à compressão paralela à grã e à flexão. O lote de madeira analisado apresentou teor de umidade em equilíbrio ao ar (11,33%), baixa densidade aparente (275,57 kg.m-3) e variação volumétrica reduzida (8,75%), estando estas propriedades abaixo dos valores apresentados pela bibliografia, para madeiras de idades semelhantes. As propriedades mecânicas analisadas (resistência à compressão paralela à grã, resistência à compressão normal à grã, módulo de ruptura na flexão, módulo de elasticidade na flexão, resistência ao cisalhamento paralelo à grã e módulo de elasticidade à compressão paralela à grã) apresentaram igualmente valores inferiores à média dos resultados obtidos na bibliografia. Desta forma, a utilização de madeira de paricá em painéis de compensados constitui uma alternativa válida, considerando que estes são leves e estáveis no que concerne à variação dimensional, quando comparados com os produtos provenientes de madeira de eucalipto.
