Contributions of perioperative nursing to patient safety in the operating room: an integrative review

Resumo: The objective was to identify the contributions of perioperative nursing to patient safety in the operating room. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, using the PICO strategy to search for articles. Results: Most studies pointed out the implementation of the safe surgery checklist as the main contribution of perioperative nursing. Other authors point out nursing contributions in partnership with other members of the health team. The contributions are related to the patient's emotional preparation during the surgery; perioperative pause to improve handoff and; nursing interventions in the operating room to reduce infection rates. Conclusion: This study showed that perioperative nursing directly contributes to anesthetic-surgical patient safety through management and care interventions and also through effective communication with the multidisciplinary team. It is important to carry out empirical studies that demonstrate the contributions of perioperative nursing to patient safety in the surgical environment.

Métodos: Se trata de una revisión integrativa de la literatura, utilizando la estrategia PICO para la búsqueda de artículos. Resultados: La mayoría de los estudios señalaron la implementación de la lista de verificación de cirugía segura como la principal contribución de la enfermería perioperatoria. Otros autores señalan aportes de enfermería en sociedad con otros integrantes del equipo de salud. Los aportes están relacionados con la preparación emocional del paciente durante la cirugía; pausa perioperatoria para mejorar el traspaso y; intervenciones de enfermería en el quirófano para reducir las tasas de infección. Conclusión: Este estudio mostró que la enfermería perioperatoria contribuye directamente a la seguridad del paciente anestésico-quirúrgico a través de intervenciones de manejo y cuidado y también a través de una comunicación efectiva con el equipo multidisciplinario. Es importante realizar estudios empíricos que demuestren las contribuciones de la enfermería perioperatoria a la seguridad del paciente en el ambiente quirúrgico.Objetivou-se identificar as contribuições da enfermagem perioperatória para segurança do paciente na sala cirúrgica. Métodos: Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa de literatura, utilizando a estratégia PICO para busca dos artigos. Resultados: A maior parte dos estudos apontou como principal contribuição da enfermagem perioperatória, a implementação do checklist da cirurgia segura. Outros autores apontam contribuições da enfermagem em parceria com os demais membros da equipe de saúde. As contribuições estão relacionadas ao preparo emocional do paciente durante a cirurgia; pausa perioperatória para melhorar o handoff e; intervenções de enfermagem em sala operatória para reduzir índices de infecção. Conclusão: O presente estudo evidenciou que a Enfermagem perioperatória contribui diretamente para segurança do paciente anestésico-cirúrgico através de intervenções gerenciais e assistenciais e, também, por meio de comunicação efetiva com a equipe multiprofissional.
